Stephany-
The whole point of the HUD programs like TND, OND, FND, and
the others is to get people to move into disadvantaged or
revitalization areas. It isn't specifically to get teachers
to teach in the areas of their schools. You won't normally
find a HUD home in an affluent neighborhood because a home
in foreclosure in those areas would go back to the banks
baking the mortgages and immediately resold. There are no
problems getting people to move into affluent
neighborhoods. The government really wants people like
teachers, firefighters, police officers, and EMTs to move
into poorer communities in the hopes that eventually the
communities will fare better. They figure that if a
professional person with a solid job moves into such a
neighborhood, that that person will bring that house into a
better condition (through remodeling, reconstruction,
regular upkeep...) and perhaps the rest of the neighborhood
will eventually keep up. Idealistic? Maybe... It is a
great program if you fully realize what it is about. I know
a few people who purchased their homes through both TND and
OND and they are quite happy with their purchases. Teachers
and officers don't make all too much money and may never be
able to afford a home in the district otherwise. While
there are many critics of the program and the areas in which
participants can buy their homes, I have seen great things
and am all for giving it a try. I am considering
participating in the program once I start teaching full-
time. Good luck with the program or in purchasing a home
through other means.
