Post: Prospective Teacher - Advice Needed

Hi,
I am currently a college sophomore, and I want to teach high school English. I would like to know how I can, at this point in my life, gain more experience in a school type setting. Can I just call a teacher at a local high school and ask if she'd like me to be her assistant or something similar? What are my options? Thank you for your time.
