I took the Art Criticism test in November of 2009. It
consisted of 3 essays which were broken down into subparts.
The test lasted for 60 minutes. Budget your time!
It included an image of the Vietnam Wall by Maya Lin and the
Three Soldiers sculpture by Frederick Hart. You were asked to
describe these and to compare them and talk about the meanings
behind them.
The Stone Breakers by Gustav Corbet. You were asked to tell
what period this was from and to discuss what else was going on
in the world and how that could have affected this painting.
Next you were asked to compare two paintings. One was by
Rufino Tamayo. I don't remember the title, but it had a large
clock sitting on a desk. Mountains were in the background.
The next painting was by Huang Binhong. I don't remember the
title of this one either. It is a Chinese scroll painting of a
landscape with mountains in the background and a small
settlement in the foreground. You were only asked to compare
these two paintings and discuss their similarities and differences.
Good luck!
