Re: teachnola pros/cons
Posted by NOLAteach on 2/09/08

TeachNOLA will probably receive about 800-1,000 applications
this year. Don't let that discourage you however.

I will also tell you that the RSD (which is the main employer of
teachNOLA members)over hired for the current school year, so
this will most likely impact the number of fellows that
    teachNOLA will accept this year.

I came down in 2006 so my interview experience was much
different from what you should expect simply because the need
for certified teachers was much greater when I applied (I was
hired within three days of my interview event). I would assume
that you will need to come down twice before the summer. Once
for your interview event and again to interview with principals.

I would recommend spending a few extra days in town when you
come here for your interview event with teachNOLA. Try to set
up some school visits so that you can get a feel for the
realities of working in New Orleans schools.

I personally work at an RSD high school and it can be very
challenging (I find the lack of organization and communication
from administration to be most challenging). I read Allen's
comments about his "friend's" experience and I would slike to
say that I personally have not experienced anything remotely
like what Allen described. I do know that the middle school
children are rougher than the high school students in terms of
    extreme behaviors.

    Good luck.
