Re: teachnola pros/cons
Posted by New Orleans bound on 3/15/08

    Good Question,

I won't be back until June, but I have friends and family who are in New Orleans and
the surrounding areas. From what I'm told, Jefferson Parish East Bank (Met, Kenner)
    has good schools and are rebuilding at a little more quicker rate than New Orleans;
but that's understandable because they didn't get as much overall damage. Jefferson
Parish West Bank (Harvey, Gretna, Marrero, Terrytown and Algiers) much the same.
They have not as many schools so the pickings might be slimmer but there are good
schools (Edna Karr, Alice Harte, etc). You'd have to cross the GNO bridge if you
lived on the Westbank and worked in New Orleans (not a hard thing to do). There are
other parishes close by (St Tammany - growing and the schools are very good, St
Charles, St John etc). You'll just need to do research about the areas and the
schools to make any real decisions. Let me suggest some websites...

    http://www.sosnola.org/nocloseups/default.asp (school information, grades,
locations and standardized test scores included)

http://www.nola.com/ (Times Picayune - New Orleans newspaper online)

    http://www.nola.com/forums/schools/ (Education forum on nola.com)

http://www.nops.k12.la.us/ (New Orleans public school district)

www.nolapublicschools.net (Recovery school district - would not come up for me
tonight, but usually works - it says server problems)

http://www.jppss.k12.la.us/ (Jefferson parish public school district)

http://www.stpsb.org/ (St Tammany public school district)

I hope these help. You sound like a caring person, I'm sure you'll do well wherever
    you go. God Bless
