Re: Teaching in NO - conerns/advice
Posted by trinigal on 4/07/08

Wow! This is a bit overwhelming and a lot of the convo is clearly personal but I want to get
some honest feedback from people who are living in NO and/or part of TeachNOLA. I visited
NO last summer for the 1st time and saw things from diff perspectives but felt compelled to
make a difference. I have a friend who was a teacher in the RSD & lost her job to TFA. I
also saw young girls & boys walking/partying along Bourbon St. & was very concerned. I
applied last year w/ RSD directly & they were extremely disorganized so flew down several
times, enrolled @ UNO for the teacher certification but things never got anywhere.

My question is should I spend money again for an interview w/ TeachNola - is their process
thorough? What are the advantages/disadvantages? This would be my 1st time as a teacher and
I love young people and know/recognize all of these challenges. I also see similar
challenges here in NY, and when I travel to DC, LA, etc.. I appreciate any of your
feedback/advice. Also, can I live on a teacher's salary in NO, esp. since the cost of
living has risen over the past year or so?

    Thanks!
