Re: Teaching in NO - poor pay, no incentives
Posted by Barbara on 4/19/08

I did a phone information session with them. I already have a credential and a job in
California. I asked them what incentives they were offering teachers and if they had
relocation help and they said they probably would not fund relocation this year.

The problem is that teachers are too used to being treated poorly and don't know when to
advocate for themselves but on this particular phone coversation, I did. I asked the
teacher they had on the line why I should leave a secure job with permanent status, decent
pay and excellent benefits for one that has none of those three. He really could not answer
me and that is the problem. You can't expect teachers to be missionaries. We are
professionals and must be treated as such. They want a Master's to move up the salary scale
but how can you afford to get one when the pay is so poor. teachNOLA needs to be properly
funded with great pay, excellent benefits and some incentives. Then they wouldn't need to
email me every other day to beg me to finish my application.
