I teach in Louisiana.
I am teaching in a self-contained, community-based,
exceptional education class. I have three students and one
assistant. I am in teacher planning room, converted to a
classroom(approximately 20"x15"). I have one student that
is very low functioning, non-verbal, not toilet trained,
and has multiple behavior issues such as; spitting,
throwing things, hitting herself & others. The other two
students are much higher functioning. School hours are from
6:40-2:40. My students arrive b/w 6:50 & 7:00 and leave
school around 2:30. My assistant is a 7 hour employee;
7:00-2:00, 30 min lunch, 15 min mornin break, 15 min
afternoon break. I, the teacher, have no break, except for
the 2 min occasional bathroom run. I can not physically
control the disruptive student, watch for the bus, and
attend to the other students. There are no other teachers
on my hall, not to mention, I am the only exceptional class
at this "Magnet" School.
My question: What are my rights as an Exceptional
Education Teacher???
