Yes, there is an automated system that's used when teachers call
in sick, but teachers can also request a particular sub if they
know of the absence in advance. Also, I know some subs that
refuse to work for teachers who had left them empty handed with no
lesson plans, and that's OK. Our district really respects
substitutes. Good subs are really hard to find.
I believe that training sessions are held every month or so
depending on demand and sub turnover. Your district's
administration office could answer those questions more accurately.
