I wouldn't claim to know all the answers about what is right and wrong
when it comes to scool corporal punishment. But I do know that getting
paddled by the vice principal in high school made a bigger impression by
far than any other punishment like detention.

Where I went, if the computer showed you as having excess tardies, you
got called to the office and the secretary would ask if you wanted a
detention assignment or a paddling. If you choose the swats, you would
have to sit in the office for 10 minutes or so waiting for the vice
prinipal to get free, with all the office personelle, including student
aids, knowing you were about to get it.

Then when the VP finally called you into his office, he didn't even
close the door. Everyone could hear the short lecture, the instructions
to bend over, and then the swats (which were defintiley not token).

The whole experience was so humiliating that I never was tardy again.
