There is a definite benefit for everyone to get the punishment over with and
not drag things out.
When I was in 11th grade, I skipped off campus at lunch with a few friends and
we got caught. None of us were bad students or in trouble much, but this was
technically truancy and could have gotten us suspended for a week. This would
have meant missing class, tests, extra-curricular activites and more.
I was happy to have the option of a paddling, as wer the other students. We
got 5 swats that hurt a lot at the time, but that got it done with and
everyone could move on. I didn't skip again and neither did my friends.
I currently teach history in high school, and do give students the option of
swats before sending them to the office. Almoost all choose it, and it seems
to work out to stop behavior like tardies without harming other activities.
