If he makes 40k then CHIP is out. I would know because I'm a
single parent and I got denied for CHIP several years ago
because I made too much. Oh, and I was being paid about $30k
    then.

I pay (or used to...haven't looked to see if the price is going
up) $130 a month to add my son. That's the *only* good thing
about our insurance is that they have single parent rates. The
dental insurance sure doesn't...it's either pay the individual
rate or pay the family rate. So someone who is a single parent
with one child pays the same as a 2-parent, 2 child family.
Grr. Needless to say, we don't have the dental plan.

The deductible is what kills me each year...but I look at it
like this...what if something major happened? Costing
thousandas and thousands? $600 and the % doesn't look quite as
bad. Not great, but not bad.

The really sucky part is that I put off my doctor's appts.
because I can't afford them unless we meet the deductible. I
have to have the money for my son's visits, who has asthma and
    other concerns.

To the OP, have you looked into BLUE? It's the private plan
for BCBS and you can buy it individually for family members.
They are VERY strict though about approval.
