I just moved here from another state where I taught for 14 years and loved every minute of it. Of course, I was expecting chages, but NEVER in my wildest imagination was I prepared for this!!!!! Seriously.....no duty free lunch, planning time is for coaches to tell us what to do, our day is planned out to account for every single second (including specific lesson plans all the way down to when the students can participate in discussion.) For example, "read aloud, 7 to 8 minutes, students do not talk during this time." It is even scheduled when students (seven year olds) may use the bathroom. There is no transition time built in. There is not time for students to wash their hands, but we are not allowed to use hand sanitizer. We eat lunch with our students. I could go on and on. Oh, all my incoming second grade students are non readers. This has to be a joke.

hmmm You had me until you wrote about all the incoming 2nd graders being non-readers.

Are you a sped or esl teacher or in a charter school?

Even in NC most 2nd graders have some reading skills.

The rest is pretty par for the course in NC.

Moving to NC is one of the biggest mistakes... I see it every year.. Young bright teachers and transplants move here and get crushed. I moved here after 5 years in another state and couldn't believe how bad it is here. Every year it only gets worse.. All we can do is warn other teachers not to come here and leave. This state is a joke...

ElemenTeacher That's why I tell my friends in Michigan and back up north, don't move to North Carolina unless you have a career kamikaze death wish. It doesn't matter what degree you have or your background and how long you've been teaching, NC does not value teachers and teacher assistants at all. Admins are power hungry and will replace you in a heartbeat. I h...See More

A This is pretty horrible, but it doesn't reflect reality in my district. Are you in a low performing district? Or one with significant problems?

ElemenTeacher Low performing though I get my kids to grow there is no support for our kids at all. Sad to say, a lot of my friends are getting out of NC ASAP. I'm trying to move back to Michigan but it's hard getting out of here.
