The cost of living in NM is a lot lower than CA, MA and everywhere
else you mentioned (though the Santa Fe area is the highest). As a
single or married person you can be fine on $30K for 3 years, but with
kids it is tough. Don't forget you could get summer jobs, and after 3
years if you play your cards right you're making at least $40K.
