I work in an urban district and my school in particular is in academic emergency. We are being told by administration (central office) that we are required to use our reading series and nothing else....no supplementing with anything. I teach first grade and think I should be able to change a read aloud if I want to, but I'm being told because our school is in difficulty, I have no say on what I use to teach. Is this true? I thought I was obligated to teach the Common Core and could use whatever tools I thought were best for my kids. I'd be interested to hear thoughts on this.
scooby If your school is in corrective action, then, yes, the district can mandate what materials are being used. Depending on where your school is in corrective action, you may have state DOE personnel on your campus everyday, checking up on what's being taught, AND the administrators. Kim Sounds like you have been at my school, LOL! Its exactly as you describe. Makes me sad that this apparently is common practice. I really didn't think that they could dictate exactly what materials I choose to use. Yes, I will be trying to get to another building for next year. Thanks to you both for responding.
