Post: Teachers Dive Into Summer School at Aquarium
Posted by Guy DiTorrice on 6/14/02
Teachers are diving into summer school at the Oregon Coast
Aquarium and earning credit for their continuing marine
biology education. Two different TEAMS programs—short for
Teaching Educators About Marine Science—allow teachers to
combine continuing education credit with their visit to the
coast.
On July 10-12, TEAMS: Marine Invertebrates get up close and
personal with the spineless wonders of the sea in a three-
day workshop designed for elementary and middle school
teachers. Teachers K-8 go home with activities, knowledge
and a new appreciation for these incredible invertebrates
to share with their students. Cost is $175 and
preregistration is required by Wednesday, June 26. Two
graduate credits and/or 20 Washington State Clock Hours are
available for TEAMS: Marine Invertebrates. For more
information or to register, please call 541-867-3474, ext.
5301.
From August 11-16, elementary school teachers (K-5) will
join Oregon Coast Aquarium education specialists, animal
husbandry staff and visiting scientists in TEAMS: Marine
Ecosystems, a week-long exploration of marine habitats and
the plants and animals living there. Participating teachers
take field trips, listen to lectures, try their hand at
curriculum activities and make crafts.
TEAMS: Marine Ecosystems program gives teachers a fresh
passion for teaching marine science along with the
information and the materials necessary to lead students on
their own ocean journey. This course is available for four
graduate credits through Western Oregon University and/or
40 Washington State Clock Hours. Cost for TEAMS: Marine
Ecosystems is $250. Advanced registration is required by
Friday, July 26, by calling 541-867-3474, ext. 5301.
Two scholarships are also available for each TEAMS program,
with application material available through the Aquarium.
All TEAMS participants also receive an educators’ discount
in the Oregon Coast Aquarium gift shop for the purchase of
additional curriculum packages as well as other educational
materials and teaching aids.
