I am a doctoral student who needs to collect data for an advanced quantitative research class. I need help from school administrators and teachers of Math, Science, Social Studies and English to complete a short cultural competency survey. My pilot study seeks to find out if there is a relationship between school administrators' and teachers' level of cultural competency and the academic achievement of minority students who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey by clicking on the link below. All information collected will be kept strictly confidential and the results will not be published. Your help is greatly appreciated!
CYA, i...See MoreI received over 77 days pay for being at home by the phone.
It was boring.
These wonderful people tried to ruin 30 solid years of good service.
Children only lie when their lips are moving and sound issues forth.
Some may take issue with my last comment but 30 years experience tells me it is true.
CYA, if you do not only you will end up the loser. (cover your assets).
That principal could have fired me instead of putting me on administrative leave because we are a "right to work" state. He also ended up being unceremoniously removed from the school. Someone goofed.
Something is seriously wrong with the educational system when something like this can happed to a dedicated (any) educator.
She also said no one needs to record themselves and it is not needed.
I said, really, case in point, this flies in the face of that comment.
Two weeks later (on paid suspension) I get a call to come into the district office this time, they need to see me. When I get there I was told that I had been fired, as they had 3 witnesses to the offence and that was their conclusion. I asked for copies of all data and paperwork which they used to draw this conclusion. I said you can provide it now or at deposition, but I am entitled to it. And by the way, did you not hear when I said that I have proof that this did not happen? Did anyone inform those who lied that slander is against the law? You do understand that writing a lie down is libel? Immediately the forms they had pushed at me to sign were retracted. and I was asked to provide a copy of the audio files for three days including the incident (which I did the next day). That was in Feb, it is now June and I just received my final summer paychecks. They finally made up their mind about the incident, they just have not shared it with me. Likely, there was no consequence to the four responsible little dearhearts. Teachers, check your state laws, but you need to protect yourself against slander and innuendo. This is my fifth time through this rodeo and I always play to WIN! The internet is where these wonderful human beings learn how to game the system. You who actually teach have a target on your back. You have much to lose, they have nothing to lose by trying. After all, they are only sweet little children!
I continue: The next day I was called back to the school and found myself (after some waiting) confronted by Dr so and so (from HR) and my principal (who said virtually nothing at this conference). I was told I am on admin leave until this is sorted out and investigated. I of course pled my absolute innocence. I have never resorted to name calling of any type in a classroom. And by the way, I have proof because I record everything I say to my students every day, all day. She got a little testy at that and went through the entire denial package (must be a dem). Did I get permission from their parents, did I seek the principal's permission, did I get the districts approval, the big list. I said, no,no,no,no, and do not need it. She said "goes against District policy", I said show that to me, I must have missed that one (not there). She said "are you recording this meeting", I said I really did not have to reply to that, but yes, I record all I say, every day, at school. She raised her voice ( I suppose for the device) and said "I do not give you permission to record me", to which I replied "I do not need your permission to record me". I then explained, in detail, that SC is a single party state, and that means you can record ANY conversation you are present for. This is LAW, not what you think, not what you like, not what you want! She agreed to disagree. Asked where the recording was (safely stored in the cloud account I keep for recordings). Finally ended with "You can't find another job, you can't contact anyone at the district or schools w/o permission" we will let you know the outcome of our investigation. See part 3 for the end of this.

Only two days in I got called into the Office and was told my students were complaining. Seems the work is too hard, and I am being too hard on them, and my classroom language is too harsh, etc... I was taken a little back by all this. I was simply following the school and department rules for class, and of course common sense. I really do not think common sense is as common as it used to be. The students were needy (as always) and just had a very difficult time divorcing their cell phones during class, not bringing food into a LAB room, and leaving cell phones before going to the BR. Seems like their life in class was just horrible. These wonderful students simply needed discipline in their little lives (or so I thought). 2 more trips to the office and then in the second week I was pulled out of a faculty meeting and asked "what happened?" in class yesterday? Wow, said I, nothing came to mind. I was then told I must email the office with an explanation about the "incident. " Which I did, and reported that I knew of nothing that had happened. Afternoon, I am again called to the office, this time confronted by two admin types. I am still a little bewildered about this situation (I am retired from teaching for 30 years). I am told that someone in my class has accused me of calling them a name and parents are upset and want to know what happened. I am told that I am now on "administrative leave w/pay" until they "investigate" the accusation. After all the backlash that I have been getting from the office, I was livid. I told them I had done nothing to warrant this action, not ever in thirty years of teaching. And I also mentioned I hade proof that this "incident" never took place. (I think they missed that part). That day I cleared my room before I went home. Interested in the outcome?? Please see part 2.
I am considering moving to the Lexington 1 school district in the next couple of years and am currently working on national boards. Does anyone know if the district compensates for that certification in addition to the state money? Thanks!

Get certified through the SC state department of education and be persistent they can be difficult. Check CERRA.org for jobs also the web sites of the various counties/districts you want to work in. Good luck.
I am struggling with severe pain from a spinal disorder and am working with doctors to determine surgery, etc. My doctor is willing to fill out this medical leave form, but if I leave and don't return (resign eventually)because I may try to do something different that I am not on my feet as much, can they suspend my license, and can they suspend it in another state too (I am licensed in more than one state)? Even though I plan to do something different, I don't want it suspended....you never know. Any experience with Horry County Schools in terms of suspending based on breaking a contract? I will give them 30 days notice as long as I am able to physically.
Be very friendly and positive about your experience with the school system. I am sure they are not going to be pleased with school starting and your leaving. That is why you must have documentation from a doctor.
In your situation, you are likely going to be fine as long as you keep your paperwork in order. You may have disability claim with social security and SCRS, but that would depend on the extent of your condition. If a doctor signs off on medical leave, they certainly can't suspend your license and have to take you back once you're done with leave. You will have to check into short term and long term disability insurance that you might have.
Beyond that, it is highly unlikely they would try to pressure someone to return to work by threatening license action after being on a medical leave. It frankly isn't worth it, and typically, they want some finality because they know you could likely get another doctor's signature to extend your med leave. It is unlikely your doctor will leave you high in dry after back surgery, or some condition that required extended leave and force you back to work by refusing to continue signing medical leave forms for you. This is especially the case if no disability money is involved. I don't know anything about this district in particular, but you should be fine.
