Re: Curious about teaching in SC
Posted by Alex on 5/04/08

Let me tell you about my teaching experience in SC. It was by far
the WORST in my long teaching career. The students in my school were
extremely disrespectful. They expected a passing grade for doing
NOTHING. Actually, the administration made it clear that no student
should be given any grade below 60% and they know that. I'm not
American and had most of my education in a country where students
REVERE their teachers and take their education very seriously. My
High School teaching experience in SC was sobering; it left me with
a big disappointment. I honestly believe that all those new laws
(include the No Child Left Behind Act) are totally ineffective. In
50 years, law makers will back recognize how mistaken they were
about how education problems should be addressed and fixed.

My advice: KEEP YOUR CURRENT JOB. DON'T leave a job you love for the
mess and utter anarchy of our schools here.
Personally, I resigned after one year of teaching. Now, I'm almost
done with my doctorate and am a full-time teaching faculty at an
excellent university. I LOVE my students and the great supportive
    environment.
Other teachers who have never been in better jobs (and hence
know no better) will encourage to teach here. You'll regret it...You
can always visit the States in the summers or during vacations.........

    Good luck!!
