Post: Teaching on Native American Reservations in SD

Posted by Sammie on 12/31/07

I am a certified special education teacher. After a year
of teaching in an Alaskan bush village, I had to return to
the Lower 48 due to family health issues. I enjoyed
working with the native children in Alaska, but must
remain in the Lower 48 for now. I am considering teaching
in South Dakota because of the large native population. I
would love to hear from anyone who is currently teaching
on a reservation or in a school that has a large native
population. What are your experiences- both good and bad?
Would you recommend that teachers come to your state to
teach? Why or why not? Any advice you can offer would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks, and Happy New Year to you all!
