The reason Memphis City has horrible scores is because of the
environment. You can only do so much with students whose main
concern is staying alive and being safe. In case you haven't heard,
Memphis is a high crime, high gang area. Also, there is not a lot
of parental support at home as there probably is in Williamson
County. These teachers get paid more because they get hazard pay.
Their lives are in danger every day when they go to work. I
guarantee they are not there sitting on their thumbs not working.
To teach in a city like that, one would have to be truly dedicated
to the profession. I know teachers there who pick their students up
and take them home. In addition, some of the schools work 6 days
per week. Don't judge if you don't know what you are talking about!
By the way, I am a teacher in Hamilton County, and have never lived
in either Memphis or Williamson County, but I will definitely
defend those Memphis teachers. I would do the same for Williamson
County teachers if they were being bashed.
