    Re: Duty Free Lunch
    Posted by Bulldog on 8/25/08

I know that no county is perfect. In the county I'm in, we don't have
many extra duties. We sign up to help for 2 sports, 1 ASD, and we have
bus duty 2 or 3 times/year. The bus duty starts at 8a. We have to be
there at 8 anyways. As for the sports duties, it's an extra 2 hours
twice a year (and they feed us). ASD is 1 hour. So for 5 hours in a
year we work late. Again, I don't see this as being abusive toward the
teachers. Our workday is 8a to 330p. Plus, if you work the games, the
kids see you and think that you're supporting them (good morale
    builder).
    I usually volunteer for 3 football, 2 basketball, and 2 or 3
baseball/softball games. I like to watch the kids play. On top of that,
my family gets to watch the games for free and the students see the
human side of the Bulldog! It's cool because it builds a much stronger
repoire with the students which helps me out in the classroom.
I've asked many of my friends who are in other counties and they do
similar things. They also find that discipline problems are very few in
their classrooms when they volunteer and show up at the games.
