The job market for teaching in the Olympia area mostly opens up
in the spring and if you have ANY kind of a special education
degree - that's your ticket IN to a job anywhere. The three
main districts (Olympia,North Thurston, Tumwater) just
experienced deep cuts and nearly had to RIF last year-Olympia
is living quite frugally for the next few years as well. Living
IN Olympia is expensive - inexpensive housing is tight (my
daughter is employed by the state and has a good job, but the
cost of living is still high here and she's been looking for
place she can afford to live and play).
I'll link the local ESD where you can apply and look for job
postings. North Thurston Public Schools is not a part of the
ESD and post their own jobs. You can look up their homepage.
You can also get a lot of info about the area by using the
zipcodes.
98501 and 98502 are the local zips.
Living south of Olympia (98512) is less expensive and is mostly
rural. Lots of teaching jobs in south county - but mostly sped.
South county is not a far drive to anywhere in Olympia. Shelton
is not a bad district to work in either.
You can use the zips to also find the ever decreasing price of
gas. Today it's between 2.25 and 2.49.
And while we have good contracts with the districts around
here - what does a 'good union' have to do with jobs?
