I just read this book yesterday and I am in love with it! I have a question about the word work time. Do you find this beneficial? How do you structure this? What do you have the students do? Do they have a list of word wall words that they stamp, wikki stix, make in clay, etc? This is the only cafe activity that I'm not totally sold on. Can you let me know how it works in your room?

I teach First Grade and they often pick "Word Work" as their choice. I used to only have wikki sticks, play dough, magnetic letters, and wipe-off boards as choices. But now, I've taken so many things out of "storage" and placed them in drawer carts so the children have access to so many activities. I have lots of word games that I had ordered from Reallygoodstuff.com. I bought a set of 6 board games from this componay that reinforces CVC words CCVC, short vowels, long vowels, etc. The kids love it. I also have a multitude of phonics type card games at different levels. They love playing Junior Boggle. In addition, I have lots of wipe-off posters of word families they use. I even allow them to use the overhead projector with transparenices that reinforce vocabulary. I also have several ready made centers that I bought from Lakeshore that the children like to use independently. Please note that I modeled how to use each thing and I've spent lots of time talking about mangagement and responsibility for materials. I've really embraced the Daily Five this year. It has allowed me so much more flexibility.....AND, the kids LOVE IT!!!!!!! I never have to worry about kids being actively engaged while I'm with a reading group. AND.....I NEVER have them do boring worksheets, just so I can meet with a guided reading group! Somedays I just look around my room and it "looks and feels" just what I've always imagined my class to be. It's taken me 15 years to feel this way! Paula Paula

swag I do not assess what the children do during Word Work, Read to Self, Read to Someone or Listening.(Those are the other options I use during the Daily Five time. There is also a writing choice, but I have not incorporated it into my program.) I do, however, often assess the students that I am working with in a small group during that time.
