Teaching the saying of words, not reading, with phonics
To those who glorify phonics as a way to 'read', I say: make distinctions. Phonics may help a child say words. It does not cause a child to get meaning. Phonics is not a panacea. Phonics is a piece of the balanced meal. No one would eat carrots all their life and say; I am well fed. It doesn't work. I can say Spanish words fluently, one after the other. I have no clue what it is all about. I can say French words fluently too. I have no clue as to what it all means. People who glorify phonics haven't taught very long, or maybe, not very well. A piece of something is never the whole thing. gh
