parent accountability
I work in special education with deaf
children. The majority of these children
have no cognitive delays - just language
delays and the lack of knowledge related to
that. We tell parents over and over that
in order for their child to be at grade
level and to have the ability to function
as independent adults in the future, they
must be able to communicate in a language
that is accessable to the child, which is
usually ASL or a form of it. That includes
reading to their child, just like they do
with their hearing children. We have no way to force this issue, but
show parents the research when they press
us for reasons why their children are
behind. I wish we had a law like Sweden -
parents are jailed if they do not
communicate with their deaf children.
