Letters to the Editor...
It's about time we make them accountable!
The longer I teach, the more I believe in
parenting licenses to reproduce! I can't
believe how many students I come into
contact with (esp. special education
students) who come from families that are
second and even third generation
dysfunctional! We need to be creative in
how we hold them accountable. The system
I'm in now has now problems with taking
them to court for truancy and child
educational neglect. We need to offer
these parents a way out by providing the
needed social services support and classes
in parenting. We've even had some parents
come to school with their high school
students for the day and follow them
through their schedule. Once this happens,
the behavior improves and you always have
that "threat" of having mom or dad come
again. There's nothing a high schooler
hates more than having their parents at
school!
