Letters to the Editor...
Parent accountability

I don't think most parents realize they
have any responsibility in regard to
educating their children. They view the
schools as providers of a service, one
which should exist for their convenience.
Many do not really care what you do with
those kiddos while you have them just as
long as there is an A on the report card at
the end of the grading period. I believe
we could keep a lot of those children day
and night if we kept our doors open. Why
is it that parents are so shocked that
little Suzy failed at the end of the school
year? Have they not been keeping up with
the program; have they not been seeing
those papers I spend my time grading and on
which I put my helpful suggestions? Maybe
we are trying to educate the wrong people.
Do they ever consider that we might be
using pencils and paper at school; do they
ever wonder if Johnny has a science
textbook? If they can't get him to school
equipped with a full stomach and materials
with which to work, if they can't tell you
the name of his teacher or what color his
textbook is, if the parents won't return
phone calls and don't attend conferences,
they should be sentenced to 180 days of
lunchroom duty, bus duty, cheerleader duty,
restroom monitoring, and detention.
