Students voting for "Best Teacher"

At my new school, students get to vote for "Best Teacher" in the lead up to Christmas. What's that about? Weirdly, some teachers (in this case the male PE ones) are actually campaigning for votes. It all seems so childish and inappropriate and unprofessional. Am I just too old fashioned and out of touch?
