Teacher candidates will learn of development characteristics from a counselor/school psychologist of a middle/high school student. In this block, your field experience collaboration and interview must be completed when students are not present.
Contact a counselor and school psychologist or resource teacher from grades 6-12 and arrange an interview. Speak with your instructor if there is the need to interview alternate professionals, if necessary.
Use the following points of discussion to guide your interview:
Discuss the perceived characteristics of this generations' adolescence.
What characteristic is changing the most? Possible reasons why.
What characteristic seems to never change?
How is physical development influencing adolescent characteristics?
How is cognitive development influencing adolescent characteristics?
How and what socioeconomic developments are influencing adolescent characteristics?
What professional development may help staff cope with changing adolescent characteristics?
What technologies are being used to facilitate student learning?
My name is Robert, and I am in need to connect with a counselor who works in secondary education to partner with me in completing part of my field experience/practicum requirements for my school.
I am currently enrolled at Grand Canyon University in the pursuit of licensure for Secondary Education in Mathematics, and I need to interview a counselor about services provided to secondary students.
This has been a trying experience, to be honest. I have spent an hour plus a day for three weeks trying to connect with a counselor, but where I reside, schools are out on summer break and my time for completion is running short. I found this forum and wanted to try and reach out here in the hopes someone will be kind enough to partner with me.
So please respond if you are willing, we can conduct the interview email or teleconference, whatever works best.
The NSLI-Y program provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. The program immerses participants in the cultural life of the host country, giving them formal and informal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures. Summer and academic year programs are available for Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. The deadline to apply for NH19 programs is October 30, 2018 at 4:00 pm ET. More information about the program and application can be found at http://www.nsliforyouth.org.
Outbound CBYX and YES Abroad NH19 applications are expected to launch within the next month, and we'll post an update here in MyAFS once those applications are available. In the meantime, interested volunteers and potential applicants should visit the program websites to learn more or to register to be notified once an application opens:

As far as being alone with a student... that just goes with your comfort level I suppose. In high school you aren't really going to be doing much "counseling," everything will be academic. Transcript reviews, scholarships, prepping for graduation, etc etc... No reason to have your door closed for that.
I am about to interview for a new counseling position at a high school. Can someone tell me some questions they have been asked before when interviewing for a high school position. I have only taught in a middle school.
