Teaching as a second career.

I just turned 63 and I am in good health. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I went to college to start to be a math teacher. I have always loved math and I am a lifelong learner. I switched majors to Computer Science, and I have worked in the field for the last 35 years. I started out as a programmer and have moved up in the field to a business analyst, and then years as Project Manager. In this field, I build teams, coach and mentor others and teach. While in college I worked for the school as a math tutor. I feel that a lot of the skills that I have would translate well to a classroom setting. I genuinely care about others and love to help others succeed and reach their potential.

I want to give back. I was fortunate enough to have some outstanding teachers that engaged my mind and kindled a curiosity and a love of learning that has lasted my whole life. I live in Texas, and I have enrolled in an alternative certification program to get certified to teach in three areas:

235 MATHEMATICS 7-12

135 MATHEMATICS 8-12

141 COMPUTER SCIENCE 8-12

I have reviewed the subject matter and taken a few practice tests and I don't see any issues in passing. I am currently working through the required course work. The state of Texas requires a minimum of 300 clock-hours of educator preparation training for certification. These hours include Required Courses, Field-based Experiences, Supplemental Courses, Internship Project, and PPR Test Review. I have completed about 60 hours of the course work. I am really enjoying the courses.

All that long winded background to ask this: Will my age keep me from having a reasonable shot at becoming a teacher? Do you know of anyone that started teaching later in life that was successful? Thank you in advance for any feedback you can give. Feel free to shoot it to me straight - I really want to know. If you think I have lost my mind, :) feel free to say so.

chem21 Hi , I have a colleague here where I am teaching, who is around 80 (maybe more) still teaching with full of energy even more active than the younger teachers. if you love teaching, and children as well why not ?
