Bio

I began tutoring students in mathematics when I was a sophomore in college. By the time I began college, I had already tutored more than 100 students, helping most of them to get 90's on all of their math tests. Throughout college and graduate school, I tutored about 20 to 30 hours per week. All of my clients came through word of mouth. During this time I continued to grow as a tutor and expand. In 2001 I received my PhD in mathematics, began working as math professor, and also started teaching SAT prep classes. Over the next 10 years I field tested many strategies for standardized tests, and everything I learned was put into my first SAT math prep book, which I published in 2011. From 2011 to the present I have been writing math books for standardized tests, while teaching college math classes, running classes for standardized tests, and tutoring higher level math. My passion has always been for mathematics and education. As a PhD in mathematics, I have the mathematical knowledge and skill necessary to understand most mathematics up to and including graduate level courses and mathematical research papers. As an educator, I have a gift for transferring my mathematical knowledge to others. I have tutored thousands of students for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, AP Calculus exam, NY Regents exams, SAT math subject tests. In 2011 I published my first SAT math book and soon after formed my company Get 800. Since then I have published more than 20 math books for standardized tests. Many of my customers have received perfect standardized test scores using only my books. In addition to teaching classes for standardized tests, I have tutored students in all levels of mathematics including advanced undergraduate and graduate courses including multivariable calculus, linear and abstract algebra, real and complex analysis, differential equations, mathematical logic and set theory. I am also currently a math professor at Hofstra University, where I teach precalculus, multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, real analysis, and occasionally set theory. Although my PhD is in mathematics, I have always been and always will be an educator. I have 15 years teaching at the college level, including graduate courses, and more than 20 years experience tutoring mathematics. I know the difference between my responsibilities as a teacher and as a tutor (in fact, I've written an article on this subject), and perhaps more importantly, I know the difference between tutoring general mathematics and tutoring for a standardized test. Different skills are required for each of these things, and I am qualified to perform all these tasks.
