Hi, I am currently taking a class on co-teaching and collaboration. For this class, I need to conduct a quick survey (9 questions) on co-teaching and would appreciate your help. It's completely anonymous. Thanks!!!
I remember when this board was hopping with all kinds of useful information about 4 blocks. Half these posts aren't even about 4 blocks. So sad. I guess everyone has moved on to Daily Five.

I have a lot of the 4 Blocks books that I don't need any longer because I have retired. They are available for sale. Let me know which ones you are looking for.
Our school has recently started using the four block curriculum, as well as Kagan cooperative learning. The ADM has abolished AR program, spelling, etc.
Some drastic changes that I'm not really happy with. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that does NOT like four block and why? Any results you could share would be appreciated.
You say spelling will be abolished.....does that mean spelling books with ...See MoreWhat are you thinking you don't like about it? I used the 4 Block framework for years..and it worked. I am now an instructor at a university teaching reading courses to early childhood majors, and I always include the activities from 4 Block because they make sense.
You say spelling will be abolished.....does that mean spelling books with weekly words to learn for a Friday test and then forgotton and not mentioned again? 4Blocks uses a word wall and word work every day so kids can see patterns in words and transfer them to their real reading and writing.
This is just one example. I can give you more about the other three blocks. It is a shift but it does work. It is not worksheet driven. It is a framework...you design your lessons. You can use a basal to get ideas. Do you know about Cheryl Sigmon's website? Some of the stuff has not been updated, but lots of good stuff there!

Does anyone have any experience using daily five in their classroom? If so, can you share what works and what doesn't with the program. Our school has just been inserviced on the Daily five and is the new initiative that our school board will be taking on over the next few years. Any thoughts?
I just love Daily Five...it is a perfect model to use for teaching students how to become independent readers. My students only do the first component-Read to self-I do not plan to introduce the other components either. We use read to self with our basal weekly basal story....works beautifully
I would love to hear the pros and cons of the HWT program. I am especially interested if kindergarten uses the traditional midline dotted handwriting paper at all. Thanks SueK

Returning to a program that works and is not only effective but fun for both the teacher and the students is a win-win situation! The CCSS emphasizes balance between fiction/nonfiction, just like the Four Blocks. There are so many parallels between Four Blocks and the CCSS that I feel like I'm coming home. Emphasis on reading aloud, multiple reading of a text with different purposes, writing in response to reading, comprehension built through debate and discussion, multileveled differentiation, the list goes on and on.
I will incorporate the best of what I've done with Reading and Writing Workshop into my Self-Selected Reading and Writing Blocks. I will utilize the best of what I've learned from The Daily 5 and F & P's Guided Reading into my Guided Reading Block. There is nothing better than the Working With Words Block -- it is outstanding as it is.
It was sad and hard to watch Four Blocks being trashed by the NCLB and Reading First reformists but now the pendulum has swung back to sanity in reading instruction and I am so thankful to still have Four Blocks in my toolkit.
Unfortunately the commercial materials are dwindling or gone but the good news is that everything you need is easy to make and put together. A previous post lamented the lack of action on this board and that may be due to many Four Blocks teachers retiring and a preference for different forums and technology but this teacher is excited about Four Blocks and the coming year and I look forward to attending the Wake Forest Reading Conference in September 2012 and renewing my love of Four Blocks all over again.

While working on my gifted endorsement after having taugh the past two years with fidelity, I too am on a quest to teach well and plan to bring 4 blocks back tomy classroom....ya
