My teachers want to use Spelling Connections as a supplement to the Phonics book. They want to use the work sheets out of the book as seat work and I say to send them home as homework.. Is this permissable?The Phonics book requires a little more effort to create lesson plans. The Spelling book has assignment in it to do. I am saying it is not 4 Block if they are using a spelling book that I feel can eventually replace the Phonics book and the teachers also feel that there is not enogh spelling words in the Phonics Book each month and that justifies the use of the spelling book. I feel that if you use the Phonics book the students will receive what they need to make them better spellers. I guess the question is do you use just the phonics book or do you supplement? My job is to implement the 4 Block Literacy Model in the third grade.

JJ I would wonder if they have mastered the first and second grade www lists and phonics patterns first, before just giving them more words and worksheets.

Most of this was review, but as the year...See MoreI understand what you are worried about. At my last school I tested the kids on the weekly word wall words each friday. I also gave them a list of 10 words that were based on a patterns from an old spelling series. On Mondays they had a few activities to do with the patterned words but I kept it very simple. Most of this was review, but as the year went on they could find the pattern, follow the pattern and later recall it. I always have a kid made spellers dictionary for words from their writing. I have found that trying to do many grammar, phonics or spelling worksheets is too out of context to be valuable. It jsut doesn't stick. Have faith tha that the word wall will teach the phonics. It gets easier the 2nd year as you start to get kids that had word wall the year before. I was careful to structure the words and the order they were presented. I didn't have vocabulary from Science etc. on my main wordwall. Hope this helps.
