I just went to a great workshop about the six traits with my 2nd grade co-teachers. We would love to put together a year's scope and sequence for 6 trait writing. Does anyone have a resource that might help us to do that? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Barb
Our 2nd grade team has been using the book by Ruth Culham called 6+1 Traits of Writing. It has many great ideas and a good start to creating your years worth of lessons. Use this in combination with materials found at [link removed].
We have had much success with this program this year. Good luck in a new adventure to writing.

Great question, I think the qualities one needs to be are well listed here: [link removed]
Basically the same characteristics one needs to be good at any profession - caring about what you do, dedication to the job, and creativity just to mention a few.

I teach 2/3 and am just becoming interested in using 6 Traits to teach writing. I do like to use my science and social studies curriculum to plan themes with. I would like to fit 6 traits into the themes. Is anyone else doing this? If so, how do you do it? Do you still stick to the recommended order for teaching the traits?
I MUCH prefer to teach by theme or genre, integrating ALL the traits into every unit. Many of the schools I work with have created Traits Menus, similar to the CAFE menus, with I Can statements of what elements of each trait the students are learning.

My school is piloting it, and we're having success. The lessons are great, enough time for independent writing in all modes, and mentor texts with video. Excellent!

In her new traits writing program from Scholastic, Ruth Culham shows how to use the scoring guides to assess short papers and organize students into small groups, based on results. Easy to do and effective, I find. You might want to check it out.

Allow students to choose different topics to illustrate each trait, or assign topics with specific content, focus, or presentation. Every idea will be organized differently, and will contain original voice and word choice that makes the piece original. Hope this helps.

I have been using the Traits to teach writing for 15 years. The 6+1 Trait book by Ruth Culhan is my writing bible. It is important to teach students that the traits are the foundation for all genres of writing. Check out writingfix.com. I am a Teacher Consultant for the Northern Nevada Writing Project and using writingfix lessons throughout the year. You will find writing ideas for teaching the traits using mentor texts, different genres, the writing process, and writing accross the curriculum. Good Luck!
Chris in MAIt is a great program. We use it in conjunction with our writing curriculum in the district. It allows students the opportunity to enhance their writing and make it come alive.
It also helps students to see that writing can easily come alive with some easy fixes. With a little practice, students writing truly grows in a year

I need some help. For one, they don't always know where to go with their writing, so I need a way of explaining it to them, maybe with a worksheet or two.
This is what I'm looking for: *Worksheet that explains proper paragraph formation and offers a bit of guided practice. *Worksheet that scaffolds essay writing and outlines proper essay format, such as "the thesis statement of your paper is...," "The attention grabber is..." with detailed examples. I would also like to know how often I should practice writing with students. How much class time should writing instruction take? I'm getting the idea that this cannot all be taught in one day.
Writing prompts that support your efforts to teach, not only writing, but Social studies, history, geography, science, language, arts, religion… even pop culture!
Use them to prompt writing, reflection, discussion, and even deeper research on the topics. They’re great for faculty and parent newsletters, too!
