My school is going totally Lucy Calkins this year K-5. What is the difference between Lucy and 6 traits? I've never taught writing so I am lost in space....help!
I am trying to combine the two. I use the 6 Traits for some of my mini-lessons in the Writing Workshop (Calkins). This year I hope to do more 6 Traits mini-lessons.

Another question: are there any resources concerning the use 6+1 Traits with second language learners? Anchor papers for second language learners? Just as we hold different expectations for a third grader versus an eighth grader when using the traits, it seems the same would hold true of students at different levels of language proficiency (same traits, same scoring guides, but expectations increasing as the student becomes more proficient in the second language). I am looking for anchor papers, or any articles addressing this. Found some resources about students using the traits in bilingual settings (writing in the native language), but not much about students who are writing in their second, less proficient language. For my own situation this would be for English language learners, but anything designed for using the traits in a foreign language classroom would help, too.
The following program is based on the score 5 rubric of 6 Traits Writing. This program was implemented at an inner-city charter school designated "Academic Emergency" for 8 weeks. The students' test scores in on the state writing test improved from 27% proficiency, to 92% proficiency and above. 60% of the students "exceeded" the state standards in writing. I am wanting to share the information about this program to the teacher community. Currently, I would love to work with retired teachers who would like supplemental income. I am currently hiring for Education Sales Directors in all regions of the U.S. I could really use your help, so that we can continue to help the youths in America. It really is a good program. Please don't mark this as spam. Before you do, just visit my website and read about what this program has done for youths in literacy. Thank You. My website is [link removed]
I am a 7th grade ESL teacher from Texas who has created a new and exciting writing program for students grades 3-12. This program has taken a school from 27% proficiency to 92% proficiency and above. Over half of the students who have used the writing program have "exceeded" the state standards in composition writing. I desire to help as many children across the U.S. as possible. This program is currently in place at several charter schools nationwide, and next year will be in public school districts such as Chicago Public Schools, Lansing School District, and Trotwood-Madison School District. The program has literally transformed students' writing abilities from limited proficiency to advanced within 2-8 weeks of using it.
This is a program that teaches students how to organize their essays and elaborate by using strategies such as onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole, simile, and interesting words. It is truly a gift from God, and I need help with spreading the good news. Please visit my website to read more about the program. I want you to understand that this is a serious program and is helping thousands of children already. It has been featured in newspapers, on television, and National Public Radio.
I am currently working on a college edition for college students, so I will be marketing this program as well.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
We are suppose to use 6traits writing in our school. I'm the only one on my grade level that took the workshop and understand it. I have tried to explain that it's more than putting a prompt on the board. There is so much detail how can I help my team become effective in using this type of writing. The teachers that did the w.s. years ago don't want to do it again even though I've talked with them many times. How can I help my team????
I have noticed that many times the teams that we are put into have trouble. Our houses at my school for the most part worked well. In order for someone to go along with something they need to see results. Have you showed them the reults you have gotten with the 6 traits? Have you as a team tried to adapt the w.s so it fits everyone involved? These are some of the strategies we have used for coherence in our groups.

jr My district provided a two day 6 Traits workshop this year. THE BEST THING was when the presenter let the many second grade teachers get together to actually talk about what they are doing for 6 traits at their grade.
Over the past few years we have come to grade level meetings and supposedly shared our 6 Traits writing experiences, but for various reasons, I don't seem to have many that I remember.
There won't be any grade level meeting this year, as we are starting to work on Curriculum Mapping. No time to do both.
My team (there are 3 of us) really work well together, but we aren't satisfied with what we have been doing. We so want to do more.

The program I believe was developed by a group of teachers in Fresno. We have used it at my school and seen significant changes within the population. Let me see if I can get you the info. Our school wide goal this year is to improve our writing scores in the 6 traits. How can I encourage special areas to incorporate the 6 traits/writing into their daily lessons? Computers, PE, music and art??
I am just about finished reading "6+1 Traits of Writing - The Complete Guide for the Primary Grades" by Culham. In the book, she has a song for each trait. The songs are really short amd simple. Is there anyway to get these songs on a tape or a CD? I cannot sing, and I mean CANNOT sing,.. I would love to use these songs in my class with my kids. Any suggestions?
They totally annoy me as well. My whole team laughed when I sang them. We agree that they will complicate the lessons.

Looking on Amazon.com, I found two books by Ruth Culham that offer suggestions of picture books to use when teaching the 6+1 Traits. I can't tell how these two books may be different, so I'd like to know if you've used either of these books, how you liked them, and might one be better than the other?
Using Picture Books To Teach Writing With The Traits by Ruth Culham, 2004
and
Picture Books: An Annotated Bibliography with Activities for Teaching Writing by Peter Bellamy and Ruth Culham, 6th edition, 2005
I'm looking at Using Picture Books To Teach Writing With The Traits by Ruth Culham, 2004 right now. if you haven't decided on a book, there are some good things in this one. the only thing i don't like is that i thought there would be more lesson plans. a lot of it is just suggesting good books to use for particular traits.
