YES!! You can use 6Trait for beginning writers. nwrel.org/assessment has
information on 6Trait. They have a new book out called Wee Can Write. I haven't
read it yet, but haven't ever been dissatisfied with NWREL.

great way to represent the 6 traits in a visual way is with
the six trait kids from "Familiar Visuals." It gives the kids
something more concrete when you tell them to be like Carlos
Conventions and use their magnifing glasses to find mistakes.
