Hello, my name is Marianna Devenow. I proudly serve on the E! Entertainment Civic Engagement Team with City Year Los Angeles. City Year is a non-profit AmeriCorps organization whose primary goal is to build democracy through citizen service, civic engagement, leadership development and social entrepreneurship. This year, over 1500 corps members will provide over 10 months of full time community service in 18 cities across the US and in South Africa. My team plans and runs community beautification days in Los Angeles and engages community members from across the city in these days of service. I am thrilled to announce that we have a big service event coming up on May 30, 2009. It will be located at Marlton Charter School for the Deaf; projects will include: painting murals, landscaping and brightening up the school.
The theme of this service day is to bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing communities. Being that half the volunteers will be hearing and the other half will be deaf we will need plenty of interpreters to help communicate throughout the day. With this said, I would like to ask if you could spread the word that we are looking for volunteer interpreters for the day of service. Please let me know if there is anyone at your organization that would be interested in serving with us.
Thanks in Advance,
Marianna Devenow

Do any of you know of accredited ASL courses that might be used by a high school student to satisfy foreign language requirements? Our small Texas HS offers only Spanish.
Brigham Young University offers ASL 1 and ASL 2 for high school online. Good program. Student can work at their pace. Lots of video taping involved so instructor can see progress. My son did ASL 2 as his public high school did not have it
To High School/Colleges Seeking ASL Instructors for Fall 2009:
I have two years teaching ASL I and II at Northern VA. Community College- Annandale and Montgomery College- Rockville, MD using mostly the Signing Naturally curriculum, with enthusiastic evaluations from students. I've also substituted for instructors at other levels, and am interested in community and workforce/first responder ASL Language Training.
Related experience includes several years as a Teacher of the Deaf, with two years at the Florida School for the Deaf, substitute teaching and summer school teaching pre-K to 12.
I completed my doctorate at the University of Maryland-College Park (2003) in Education Policy and Leadership with a focus on Curriculum. Administrative experience included working with the Montgomery County, MD. Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program.
I enjoy teaching ASL, but I am trying to get out of the p/t adjunct cycle and obtain a full-time job or contractor position working for several schools within a district or several area school districts (K-12) or with higher education.
This is for Fall 2009; I'm prepared to move for job with the best match. Resume, references, transcripts and so forth sent upon request. Interviews can be conducted via videophone and/or in-person interviews.
I look forward to hearing from you.Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Anne Gray Liversidge, M.Ed., Ph.D. Takoma Park, MD [email removed]
Hello ASL Teachers, I have been asked to teach ASL II to high school students. I currently use both SN level I and Master ASL in ASL I. I need input ASAP!!!
If you are having success with SN, go ahead and get level 2. I am not sure if Master ASL level 2 is out yet. For a level 2, (based on my previous knowledge of ASL classes), it is just a deeper and more complex version of level 1. Teach more classifers, more complex vocabulary, add more culture, etc. It's a broadening and deepening of the first year.
If you need anything, please e-mail me at: Christian.[email removed]
Thanks, CP

I am an ASL teacher at the high school about an hour north of Los Angeles. I wanted to let you know that I recommend and use MASTER ASL Level One textbook for my students. It also comes with a workbook for fingerspelling/numbers/ and ASL gloss. It is a wonderful textbook and my students have learned so much from it. I base my lesson plans on what the students are to learn each day according to the textbook. I also wrote the curriculum for ASL 1, 2, and 3 for our district. Any questions, let me know.

Good luck!

I am also an ASL High school teacher in Los Angeles. If you are working for a public district, there may be a "district approved" textbook, which will probably be Vista's Signing Naturally. Master ASL is good and newer, but more expensive than Vista. Some say that even Master ASL isn't the best to teach on it's own. (I've used it, and it's pretty good, but also has some errors) Every ASL Curriculum need supplementation by the teacher. My suggestion is to find out which text your district will purchase, and use the book as a HW and reference tool. I wouldn't plan lessons directly from the pages of the book, because neither Vista or Master ASL necessarily teach ASL in the correct order. Go with what you think the kids need to know first and go from there. Use the books, just don't go page by page. But that's just my suggestion.
For Michelle- Is there a mailing list for Los Angeles area ASL teachers? or a website or message board?
