I, however, realized, that I'd likely be "stuck" where I am for a long time thanks to the lack of a decent transfer round and there aren't many opportunities where we are to change up positions. Job opportunities for my husband were pitiful. I decided that 20 more years overseas was not the right thing for me and my family. One thing I do have an issue with is that DODEA has suddenly started testing like they are making up for the years they let teachers teach and students develop a love of learning (which is why I came to DODEA in the first place). This year, we were required to do so many tests in Reading and Math and my students spent so much time on assessments. We had Reading/ELA assessments that took 2-3 class periods to complete. Multiply that by the 8 we finished...and that's at the very least 16 sessions where instruction wasn't happening. Math was the same, but then we also had required problem solving assessments in addition to unit tests...so it was more like 25 math classes that were not used for instruction plus the 4 days of PARCC testing. I have been with this system for 10 years and this was the first that my students really experienced stress and unhappiness due to all of the tests. If we are doing what the higher ups want, then there is not much time to help students develop a love of learning. Also, be aware...new hires and anyone choosing to separate or retire are now being charged tax in their move....at a rate of 28%. That could be $10,000+ for some families. And HR forgets to mention this.
I loved my time in the system, but overseas life isn't for all. In my previous overseas location, I felt like I had a family in my friends/coworkers and my school was so cohesive. Sadly, I never felt that way at my current assignment, although I think we have great people.
LolaTeachSorry to hear that Teach. I was in a DODEA school where students were constantly tested. Thankfully I am now in a school where the administrator has common sense and is in touch with what students need. Unfortunately, I don't know how long this will go in since this person isn't really going along with what HQ requires. Sad.
Had the interview on May 31. No word from interviewer. No word from HR. No 'DoDEA staff is currently processing your application.' No golden ticket wrapped around my candy bar. May I correctly assume I was not the preferred candidate? :' (
Hi- I have posted before about this, but I applied almost a month ago and I am still in pending status. Does it normally take a super long time to review the applications? I worry I will miss out on any opportunities for next year. I did call today but I didn't get much of an answer.
All you can really do is keep writing/calling, at least once a week. On the upside, you could (in theory) make a referral list even if you are not marked qualified.
So I am considering removing myself from consideration for now. We started talking about the logistics of moving and I hadn't really considered our dog. She is my baby and there is no way I could leave her, but I also don't see how she could travel. Has anyone moved overseas with a dog that has anxiety and can't be kenneled? :(
LolaTeachUK and Japan are very difficult, with Japan being the most difficult due to quarantine requirements. Other locations are okay, but depending I. The size of your dog, he may need to travel in the plane's cargo hold, which can be stressful.
If you can get a flight on the military plane that goes directly from Seattle with space for your dog, it would be the shortest flight possible and direct. Some people drive to Seattle even across country to avoid another flight. A crate is needed, but you can get as large as you need and start a few hours at a time. Some use essential oil collars that help relieve anxiety in their dogs.
I didn't have my county fill out the form 5014 for verifying my teaching experience yet. If I get an offer, will they accept it and adjust my pay to include the 5 yrs of experience?
IdaI believe it is the other way around. Stateside maximum is 5 years (starting on step 5 as they start on step 0) and overseas maximum is 10 years (starting on step 11 as they start on step 1).
I am curious on your opinions. I was a special ed teacher and para in mild/moderate and moderate/severe for about 7 years. I then got my masters for Reading Specialist and Dyslexia Therapy and this is my first year out of SPED. I have been working in an international school for a year as Literacy Coordinator/Reading Specialist/Coach/Learning Support teacher and was just placed on a referral list for a Moderate to Severe classroom with DODEA. The international school is a great resume builder and opportunity since I'm 28. The work environment isn't great but I'm very passionate about Reading and Learning Disabilities and I don't want to break my contract for this DODEA position.
My questions are: how likely am I to get another chance? Would I be stupid to pass up this job and do I just need to use it to get into Dodea (if there is even an interview)?
Bairsped733Thank you guys so much for your input. I have decided to decline the interview as I am very passionate about reading and learning disabilities/learning support. I would want someone passionate about the moderate/severe role to accept the interview. Fingers crossed that this will not burn any bridges and they will consider me for future positions.

What are the chances both of us get job offers at the same time and place?
What happens if only one of us gets an offer?
Lastly, my wife was offered a position at Ft. Knox. Is it better to take anything just to get into the system, or wait for a position (we are already abroad on our own) in a place near where we prefer to be?
hahaNo problem. People just get confused about things and trying to keep it straight in posters/readers minds.
So, I'm happy it worked out for you but I'm still curious how you managed to get the benefits if they were in fact just following the new policy. Was it because they had not informed you of it at the time you were hired?
I was wanting to take the sped test next year. I know that I have to have college classes to back up the sped testing for DoDEA. So my question is how many sped college classes should I take?
