hahaInt'l teaching was a good life for us before we got into DoDEA. Check out Int'l Schools Review if you have not already. They have an active free forum and a paid side with school reviews and another forum where you can name schools and ask for feedback.
Does anyone have advice for securing student teaching with Dodea? I'm applying to schools that participate in student teaching with them (GMU, UMUC, Liberty). Also, Does it help to be local already? My husband is able to transfer to our top choices (Okinawa, Korea) through his current job. Hoping I would be able to student teach and be hired locally afterwards.
If you have any advice for masters programs, student teaching or endorsements - I would love to hear it! I know this may be a long shot but I want to do everything in my capacity to maximize my chances. Thank you!
MajorSpEDI realize this is an old post, but I did my student teaching through Dodea. There were several other student teachers as well. If you have any questions I would be happy to try and answer them.
I am an SLP, looking to work for DoDEA. I'm open to anything. I'm completing my clinical fellowship year in a school district now. I've been told SLP is a good position to apply for DoD, but just wondering if you know what the likelihood is? I am a veteran as well, and a product of DoD schools as my dad was active duty my entire life. Is there a best way to highlight that on my application? I'm currently pending on my application, hoping to move to qualified soon!
lovetotalkslp@Icanread thanks for responding! Where are you located? I applied on EAS. I haven't seen anything except for VA positions on USAjobs. I just didn't know if the excess was affecting every position within the school system, or teachers specifically.
SLP is a good qualification to have for DoDEA. It seems that the numbers of qualified candidates is not THAT great in the system, so even though the numbers of SLP's/openings is relatively low compared to other positions, every complex has at least one and often two SLP's depending on the size/number of schools/student in need of services, etc. I don't the excess has had a big (or any) impact on SLP's/services.
You might also see if you could qualify as a Speech Assessor as that is often a separate position or could even be combined with a .5 SLP position which would give you more potential openings to be considered for.
There should have been a section in EAS to document your veteran status but not a lot of opportunity to bring out your previous DoD school connection. If you ever make it to an interview, it might be helpful though.
I have very slim hopes for getting on this year (you never know.. i guess!, and am looking towards next year!
I'm working on my Masters and ESL endorsement (should have ESL by dec of this year). The esl endorsement would be k-12, so even more flexibility! I am attending AP French training this summer to add some quals.
Just curious, is there a large number of ESL students in the DODD schools? Is it similar to most public schools, where there is always a need? Thanks guys!
iowatoabroadhopefulThanks, both of you! I emailed EAS my program of study, and they said that it should be okay. I also called when I had another question, and the lady mentioned that if I get the state certification in ESL, that the number of credits needed is half if I have that. So, fingers crossed that's all true! Thanks for the clarification!
I heard from more than one person that veterans are only on a 1 year probationary period instead of the 2 year. I tired to look that up, but can't find anything to support this. Is this just an urban legend or maybe a outdated policy?
What does it mean that you finally got qualed. I have submitted application and all I've received is a general email stating to go in and update my app.
So now my question if anyone can help. I have been qualed for special education mild/moderate for EC-12 and selected my target areas as Europe and Puerto Rico as well. Does anyone have any idea how long it might take to start receiving interview emails or calls if you are selcted ?
SpEd_EddieYou aren't going to like this answer. But your chances are slim to none this year. They have excessed 360 teachers this year. They have to place alll those teachers before they start hiring new ones.
hahaI don't disagree with much of the above. The odds are longer this year than most years. But, no one can say for certain that there won't still be some new CONUS hiring this year. There likely will be some, whether it be 10 or 100, no one can really knows. I think we'll know more in the next month or so.
Would being certified in more than one state make your application more desirable to the DODEA? I'm considering moving to another state to make my application more diverse.

They would readily take someone with a non-working spouse and 2 children. They provide airfare for the whole family. They pay settling and some shipping/excess luggage fees. They also give you a stipend each month for rent which comes pretty close to covering rent, depending on your taste in housing. They do not help you find a rental at all but there are agents that speak English. The salary is quite good and affords you the ability to either save a lot or travel a lot or save a little and travel a little. You also get a return flight home each year for you and your family. If you chose not to go home, you get to keep the cash. You get a one way ticket home if you complete your two year contract or any subsequent contracts. Break a contract you will owe them $. Having said all this, Albania is a developing country and the school has some serious dysfunction going on. Supplies are often short, there is a teacher's handbook that is on the Google drive and gets changed regularly and the staff is basically told to obey it or leave. I have not worked for DoDEA but it sure seems much less dysfunctional than this school in Albania. You have to ask yourself what you can and cannot live with. Any international school you go to, try to get a handle on the turnover rate and do spend the money to join International School Review and read the reviews carefully.
hahaAgree that Eastern Europe is a little more accessible and doable then Western Europe. The housing allowances are a little better and the cost of living generally a little lower. Budapest, Sofia, Bucharest and Warsaw all have decent to very good int'l schools.
IcanreadAll taken care of! I emailed a couple people at the HQ cert office and contacted the union. This morning I had an email saying the certs would be added :)
