Things are finally moving along. I mentioned my situation a few times (I am an Assist Professor working in Japan).
I got my 9-12 social studies teaching license current and re-instated, uploaded all of my information for approval, and am waiting to take the next step.
Although when I uploaded my transcripts, it said "invalid" in brackets next to the title. I followed the directions and uploaded a scanned copy of my official transcripts, but was a bit confused by that. I sent a message to EAS HQ for clarification.
Where do I go from here?
I want to stay in Japan and work on a base, but what is realistically the next step to achieve this goal. I have submitted the 5013 forms for proof of experience, the recommendations have been approved, and the checklist is all green.
Do I send "appeal" letters to all the vice principals in Japan with my qualifications?
Do I contact my one and only "inside contact" in Okinawa and ask if he can pass along my information?
Does anyone have any advice on how to be pro-active. I would like to get hired with DoDEA within the next two years if possible.
My current position in Japan is not a bad one, but as I consider starting a family with my wife, DoDEA and working for the US government becomes more and more appealing.
Any feedback is appreciated. Thank You for your advice and consideration.
hahaNot sure about online AVID course but search around, it might be possible. Yes, SPED is an excellent cert to have but maybe not so valuable without some type of relevant experience in it.
Does it take a long time to get your finger print paperwork sent to you?? Does anyone else have trouble getting your HR rep to respond to emails or phone calls?
To any of you who are teaching at the High school level. Does your school offer Dual credit versions of some of its classes. If so, from what University do they do this from and which classes does your High School offer?
Whenever HQ is asked about any program or initiative they always give the same answer "Yes, we've been discussing ways to put fill-in-the-blank together and we're interested in teacher input as to how this might look."
After a while teachers get the message and stop asking. Others beat their head against the wall forever. This can result in developing a syndrome known as HIT ME, also known as Headquarters Induced Traumatic Medical Encephalopathy. This is a AMA recognized condition that shows up on MRIs of older teachers.
hahaPossibly. But the longer answer (in general) is yes, at least some DoDEA students are currently able to participate in some dual-credit classes. Your results may vary by location, school and the time of day.
Ron.eI called yesterday about the PPIS position. They said that they were processing other positions first. They should be processing the applications for PPIS in the next 2-3 weeks.
I've had 2 areas of qualification up for reevaluation for a few months now. How long does it generally take for them to reevaluate? Also, will an email be sent out with instructions of what we need to update on our applications and when?
Your old principal needs to take care of her own problems. There is no teacher shortage. There's just a shortage of people who want to take crap positions. Tell her I'll fill the position. But let her know I want her to match my salary. Don't let her dump that guilt trip crap on you.
As soon as you come on board DoDEA will give you a Dodea teaching certificate which is good in over a 100 schools around the world.
If the above advice about the one-year suspension is right, well, I wouldn't worry. You can probably make it a year without your Texas cert.
But you are burning bridges, so make sure that when you come over to DoDEA that you won't have to head back to Texas until this storm in a teacup has blown over.
We had several long term subs filling in for teachers/open positions most of the year last year and have at least one this year. We almost never have had teachers covering classes but have had admin cover a few times. We have subs available to fill in for open para positions. So, I guess we are at the fortunate end of the spectrum,
The process does seem to take a ridiculously long time, but 13 months seems extreme even for our HR folks.
IcanreadI've worked in a handful of districts. Every single one of them has had problems with getting enough subs. It's not a problem specific to Dodea, unfortunately.
I do have one question about the on-boarding process. I received an email over a week ago about my background check materials being sent to the OPM, but haven't received a firm offer yet! I have emailed my HR representative to inform her I received the confirmation email, and at the 1 week mark to see if she had heard anything, and nothing yet! Is this normal? I know I've seen a few posts where firm offers came within days of receiving the OPM email.
Thank you all so much for all of your help and advice! I couldn't have done it without you all!
