Before I go into this I need to know the factual answer not opinions, would my children need to be up to date on vaccines? We have an exemption in the states.
It is the military and they take things like health and safety fairly serious. We are not subject to all of the policies that the military is, but it is generally tighter then in the states.
If HR is of no help, pick a DoDEA school and write the principal or secretary if you can find the name. I'd ask ours but they are pretty new and are just learning many things.
hahaIf LQA is not provided (which it's not since PR is not a foreign location) then you would still be charged rent/utilities for living on base. How much that would be would be a great question for housing and/or someone already there.
Different insurance plans are offered. There is a cost. As an example, a family of three would run around $160 per paycheck for very good coverage. Salaries are generally higher than in the states unless you are teaching in California or some bigger districts in NY, etc. Even then you would generally be better off due to the housing benefits and cost of living/post allowance (an additional tax free benefit that runs from $250-600 per paycheck, depending on your location, currency rates, etc.
Most people seem to do very well on one salary. although everyone's experience is unique. Most seem to enjoy the life/lifestyle, travel opportunities, feeling of adventure even if you are just working and going home or out dinner most weekdays (but you are doing it in Tokyo, or Germany or England!).
In general, work environment will be better than many/most schools/districts in the states and the experience is also generally a positive one for families. It's considered a very good gig but is not for everyone. Some people never make it off base or are uncomfortable with language barriers, some people can't handle being away from family or existing friends, some people don't like to be in close, constant contact with the military.
So, yes, I (and many others) find it to be totally worth it, but experiences and opinions will vary.
Hello. I am very early in the application process for a Dodea teaching job overseas, and I really don't know much about it. Does anyone know if I am able to bring my husband and two kids??
I am able to take my car with me overseas, but not sure what to do abouwith insurance. Should I cancel my current insurance now and transfer to geico or just wait until the car arrives there and get insurance offered from someone on post? Thanks!
hahaMy understanding is that Japan is the only place with significant car import restrictions. I don't believe they would agree to ship it if it wasn't allowed or required modifications.
I am now in processing headed to Japan. How long before I get travel orders? I have already passed background check and getting my physical next week. All in processing paperwork is finished except for medical. I have not received passports yet but I have sent everything off. Am I two months away, one month, two weeks, what?
HopefulMy suggested travel date was 4 days after getting the orders with a report date about 3 weeks away. My official passports were not prepared due to special circumstances so I will be delayed until they are ready. If you already sent everything in for official passports they'll likely try to get you there more quickly.
I'm certified social sciences 6-12 and have taught 10 years but have been a stay at home mom for the last 2 years. My husband would obviously have to quit his job would we be able to survive with only one income.
So I interviewed for a position but in August and was not selected for an overseas position. The principal contacted me via email and asked if I was still interested in a position. She was going to call HR to see if she could hire from a previous list since my name didn't come up on a recent list. Just wondering if that can be done?
Great posts by haha and isitfridayyet. Thank you! Leads to more questions. Do I set up the plane tickets and buy them and then reimbursed or does DODEA set them up and pay for them? Same for packout, etc? Thanks
hahaAgreed. As a new hire, the gov't generally arranges (with your input as to specific times/dates) and pays for everything. Later on you would be able to arrange some travel and get reimbursed.
I've been told my travel orders will come later this week. We are so Excited! From the time you get your travel orders, how long before you actually leave? Trying to be mentally prepared for timeline so I'm realistic!
24 hours: Reserve tickets now. When orders arrive book the tickets and head straight to the airport. Technically that would be less than 24 hours. But new hires usually don't have official passports already, so this is an unlikely scenario for you.
As well as passports you probably still need to schedule a house pack out, a car shipment, and get plane reservations. The more stuff you need to do the longer it takes. And all that is highly dependent on how busy the packing companies in your local area are.
IsItFriday?Call and try to make all the necessary reservations for planes, shipments, pack-outs, hotels etc now.
Usually you need your orders in your hands, but in quieter times, if you are a good talker, many of these offices will "pencil" you into the schdule pending the actual delivery of your orders.
