Is it possible to get a house on base? Is there anything I should know about bringing pets? Is it hard to find a house off base with pets? Do you find that living on 1 income, with a family, is doable?
Make sure you talk to some teachers when you get here to learn some other tips and tricks that'll help you in your hunt. We found out that the navy does quite a bit if their transfers at the same time of year and that period is largely coming to an end. So, within a few weeks thwre should be a slew of new housing options coming on the market soon. We also learned about areas we might like to live in and how to negotiate based on your lqa.
Just an FYI so people are aware. We received a memo last week announcing that the FLES program would be ending at the end of this year. This means that all permanent FLES teachers will need to be found a different placement next year. This could have major implications for the transfer round this year, and hiring for next year.
somedayDon't parents want this program? I would think if some vocal parents from across the different bases could get organized that they could effectively fight this change.
IcanreadYes, most parents I've talked to love the program, and I don't think most know at this point. We received a letter from Mr. Brady a week ago. Apparently it has been a conversation for a few years.
Question 1: Those who are in the DOD, are you sure the retirement is really around $20k? That seems crazy to me since the government usually offers good retirement packages and at DOD stateside top pay at retirement, one's salary would be between $80-100k...so $20k would be a 20% retirement package...which seems really low. In VA I would have retired with $50k, in OH I'll retire with $45k. This low DOD retirement is making me think I'll stop applying, if it's true. Thanks so much.
Question 2: My sister is also interested in the DOD. She's SPED and enjoys teaching the little ones with severe disabilities. Are there a lot of SPED openings each year for that specialty?
You're correct. 20 years with Dodea yields a retirement that is 22% of the average of the teacher's top three years.
People don't join Dodea because of the pension.
But most people that do join are taking a step up the financial ladder. If you already have a great job with a great pension, then the simple advice is to keep it.
hahaOnly if you actually want to teach in DoDEA Americas. Many people are happy where they are living/teaching in the states but would move to take a job with DoDEA overseas. Nothing bad about that.
RJI believe that the antiterrorist triadi is he only one that isn't offered via the intranet. The rest are in the employee training portal, which you need a CAC for.
lma324I never heard from the principal after my interview. I got an email from HR with a tentative job offer almost 3 weeks after my interview. The principal informed me it's not her that makes the hiring decisions. She sends her recommendation to the superintendent, then he sends it to HR and they make the final decision.
Does anyone on here have the library science cert? I am looking into just taking the 12 hours of technology and 12 hours in library science. I know you have to have specific course names and descriptions. I am looking for something online if anyone has suggestions. TIA!
lma324Hi! Yes, I have mine. I actually got my masters in Library Science with my concentration in school library but there were several people just getting their certs to add on to their teacher certificates. Louisiana State University has an online program for Library Science cert. Hope this helps!
