Just MeHaha, does it seem like I have a good chance of being on referral lists and interviewed based on my credentials? Maybe not this year, but at some point in the next couple years?
Hello. I'm posting for a friend of mine. If a DDESS employee is newly hired for a DODDS school, will the teacher receive a "final" offer or a "tentative" first for a new background check??
HelpOthersIt still says tentative. The employee still needs to get the physical and MAY need a new background check. Some have evidence of passing the background check in their personnel file and some do not, so it depends on this for the background check. I believe it is due every 5 years.
1- I do not believe there is a maximum specified number. It varies wildly by subject, location etc. and generally falls under the principal's discretionary authority.
2- Everyone gets two per day or one per day if you are on block schedule.
3- Again, never heard of absolute max or min. 24 is a working max. for some locations based on class size, furniture etc. Have seen classes with as few as one for things like independent study, 2-3 for foreign languages, etc.
4- Basically none that fall during your planning on scheduled classes. In theory you could be assigned something that fell between your report time (say 7:25) and when classes start (say 8:00) such as monitoring a parking lot. In practice, this doesn't seem to haven't that often or varies quite a bit between locations. Principals do apparently have the power to assign Extra Duty Contracts. They generally do not do this unless there are not enough people who are interested/have volunteered.
5- Varies wildly between locations, principals, etc. Ask more specific questions if there is something in particular you are interested in.
6- In the past, new hires were on two year provisional status and were observed 3 times per year with final evaluation of meets/does not meet expectations at the end of each year. After that, there was a 3 year Professional Growth Plan cycle where you were not observed during the first two years and had two (?) observations during the 3rd year with the same meets/does not meet expectations evaluation at the end of each year.
They have recently attempted to unilaterally thrust a new system on us which the union is fighting. They have briefed us on the new system but the details didn't really stick. I believe there are 3 categories on the evaluation now (does not meet expectations, meets expectations, exceeds expectations).
7- Debt letters are a common complaint. Generally they are for LQA, insurance, etc. where they say you have been paid too much and they want it back. Amounts vary greatly but they are generally flexible with repayment. Union tries to help but the burden seems to be on us to prove the debt is not valid. Other than that there are move in costs, etc. which vary by location.
8- I forget the details of the insurance. There might be some catch up payments.
A lot of relevant information is here if you get the urge to trawl through it:
hahaAlso, generally we are required to attend a monthly faculty meeting that sometimes runs until 4:00. That's pretty much the only after school meeting we can be required to attend.
I didn't apply for grades 7 & 8 bc I'm not certified in my state, but they have it listed under elementary positions on the DoDEA website. Why is it listed that way? Technically I'm certified to teach through 5th in my state but qualified for 4-6 with DOD. All I have to do to be state certified is take a test. Any insight?
hahaThat is an odd way they have it listed. In reality, you would likely need to have MS certifications in specific subjects for it to do much good with DoDEA (from my understanding). I guess it must get used (or have been used in the past) in some locations.
LolaTeachAlso, NFCU has an excellent mobile banking app, which allows you to deposit checks and complete several other transactions. Their credit card doesn't have foreign exchange fees. I used it when I lived overseas and not having a branch nearby was never an issue.
WA_CounselorI'm headed to Korea if I get that firm offer, and I'm currently a DoD employee, so I qualify for many of the credit unions open to military personnel. I would like to eventually end up in Italy, so I'd love to figure out if there's a credit union that would work for both continents.
Do...See More1. What do Dodds inservice days typically look like? Is the time spent usefully during these days?
2. Are there assigned duties for teachers? At my current high school, each teacher must devote 45 minutes of their plan time to a duty Hall duty, supervising lunch, supervising a study hall, helping out in the office.
Do these things vary by school? I would of asked these questions during my interview, but I felt I had asked enough questions and didn't want to go overkill. Any insight would be appreciated!
Once you submit everything does the application tell you if you are missing a qualification (such as credit hours) or do you just figure it out by yourself. Is there an email or phone that you can speak to someone to have things explained. Or is really more of a you have to figure everything out by yourself.
Just MeI never received an email stating that my qualifications page had been updated. This has me worried, Speak2me, is it normal not to get that email?
HELP!!!!! I am a former Engineer with an MBA. I completed an Alternative Certification Program to teach Math 6-12 and have since taught Math, successfully for 11 years (in 3 different states, middle and high schools). Are you or anyone you know familiar with Dodea and Alternative Certification? I would love to join Dodea. What are my chances?
HelpOthersLook at the teacher requirements. There are a few methods classes that you must have. Your program may not have required them. I agree the earlier you submit what you have the earlier you will be told what you need.
2 years experience is the minimum that principals are generally looking for so you will be above that when you are applying. As for helping your application, generally the only way to do that is to add certification areas. Take a look at your transcripts and see if you area close to adding any other certs. If you have/can get state certified in an area that DoDEA offers then that would normally halve the numbers of credits they require. Math Specialist, Gifted, ESL, anything that would offer a principal some options/flexibility would help.
If that's not possible/feasible then just keep honing your craft, ensuring excellent references, serve on some committees and try and hope for the best. Maybe try and use some of your Architectural background for some projects if you haven't already. It won't necessarily help you get on referral lists/get interviews but might help you if you can get into an interview situation.
Short of that, marrying someone on active duty who gets assigned overseas to a base with a DoDEA school would be very helpful! :D
biology, microbiology, anatomy. They are not upper level but they told me they would count towards the 24 hours needed. I just need 9 hours of upper level to qualify. My question is if I have my state endorsement in MS Science does that mean I would need 1/2 those upper level credits or would I still need 9 hours total? Trying to decide the most cost effective options. I am also 3 hours off from qualifying in speech. Thanks!
BubbleHeadI was told by HR that upper level hours are not reduced by a certification. I don't have a science certificate so it was never put to the test. I got 6 upper level SH from University of LaVerne in 5 weeks for $690 to complete my MSHS science quals.
