hahaI don't believe so: Applicant must have completed a minimum of 9 SH in other related fields such as: humanities, art, music, history, drama, theater, literature, dance, or philosophy.
BubbleHeadActually there are guidelines for suitability as well outlined in 5 CFR 731. If you are disqualified for any of these reasons you most likely wouldn't have a teaching job anywhere.
seoul94Haha, do you know how many credits/classes I should take to qualify for Sped? I know once I had 4 college classes in Early Childhood I was then considered "qualified" to teach EC, which is the grade level I want to teach for DODEA. I'm just trying to see if I should take a couple of Sped class at my local community college. Thanks
hahaGenerally you need 30 credit hours for each of the different SPED areas. If you have state certification in SPED (some states allow you to test into it) you usually only need half of that number.
HelpOthersMake sure your application matches the requirements listed for the position. If you apply through USA Jobs, make sure your resume documents all the needed criteria.
paradisepeach5@Kelly - Thank you! I am heading to the Pacific Region. I agree with @Mary. Pay attention to the language of the requirements and support it in your resume. Best wishes!
I'm interviewing for a .5 teaching position...it'd be a way in. My question is once hired, if a 1.0 position opens up, can you apply for that? Is there a period of time after hire that you are locked into that position before being eligible to move into a different grade level, school on the installation?
hahaI believe the covered benefits would also all be .5 if you are hired from stateside but I'm not 100% sure of that or how it would actually work in practice.
I need an online college, or online courses, to get two add-ons. They need to offer SPED classes and Reading classes. Can anyone recommend an accredited college that will count towards my state certification and DODEA? Preferably one that does not cost 4 thousand a semester. MUCH cheaper would be much appreciated!! Thank you in advance!
I am a .7 high school teacher and this is my second year in the Music department . I received an email from the assistant superintendent's secretary this last Friday asking me to come in for a meeting with the AS. I got back to them today. Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. When I asked what it was in reference to, they said it's "regarding your position for next year". I was wondering if anyone has had a similar meeting? I had met with the AS back in December to get my wife put o my insurance because we are having a baby in August. I don't think she would fire me knowing that. But I've also had glowing feedback from my observations. No one in my department has heard anything and neither has my union rep. My wife thinks I may be being bumped up to full time but I feel I may be demoted. If anyone has any insight or has had a similar situation I'd greatly appreciate hearing it. I only have to wait until tomorrow but it would be nice to chat about it with other teachers. Thanks.
LolaTeachIt may be a change in position or reduction in force. If you are RIFed, they usually try to place you elsewhere, although that's usually for full time positions. Your best bet is to wait, rather than speculate and worry.
HelpOthersIt seems all the vets get on the referral list first. Also, people with the most certifications, even if not related to the position, make it on the list next.
hahaIt's possible, but the odds are pretty long unless you are in a niche/super high needs area, did your student teaching with DoDEA, are a local hire, have personal connections, etc.
Int'l school experience can be helpful (i.e. shows that you can adapt to change and odds are less that you will flee back to the states, etc.) but it may be wash in some cases (i.e Some principals not valuing experience outside of a US K-12 experience, etc.).
So, long story, short, those factors can be helpful but it's tough to say how a specific principal will weigh them. If you can get to an interview, it will be up to you to spin them to your best possible advantage.
As for ES positions, we don't hear about them on here all that often and many positions do seem to go to spouses of military and teachers (and there are many qualified candidates in the system) but, they are among the most common/numerous positions and many positions do get filled every year. So, hang in there!
And yes, adding MS might not be a bad idea, if feasible.
