I'm in the same boat. I was referred twice last year for two separate postings. One of them stated that they chose not to fill the position at that time. I haven't received an email stating that I qualify yet, this time around. When did you receive yours?
I'm a new applicant to the DoD so I feel a bit underprepared when it comes to the online application, gaining qualification, and then hopefully being offered a position. I thought I would turn to you all that are in the same boat and teachers with the DoDea. I submitted my application in Janauary and have been patiently waiting to hear anything but recently I've had to update my information particularly my current address and phone number. I hit submit in the individual section but according to the online guide if I update any section I would have to refinalize my application and it never gave me that option, should I be concerned? Also is there anything I can do to be proactive about my future employment as I haven't heard back from anybody about anything? Thank you all for any advice.
hahaWhen a principal has an opening they request a list of qualified candidates from HR who have the required qualifications. Candidates on that list generally (but not always) receive an email telling them that they are on a list and may be contacted for an interview (principals generally select 3-5 people from the list to interview).
HelpOthersThere a new AP social studies class being offered I think, so getting certified in that course (or courses) may help. Government (1 semester) and another class I cannot recall the name of.
DodeaHopefulMy opinion is that when ELWOP came out it asked for Social Studies with concentrations in Government and US History So I would get AP GOV and APUSH
slpgeekHi Anna - Just out of curiosity, did you get notification that you were on a referral list? Or did you already interview? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Even just hearing that there is an opening is exciting! Thanks!
CMI received an email that I was on the referral list for this school, but I haven't heard directly from anyone at the school. I've even sent an email to the principal, but I haven't heard a thing from them.
Services off base can be excellent ...See MoreIt varies quite a bit by country/location/base, etc. Most bases will allow civilians some type of clinic privileges for prescriptions, doctor visits, emergency visits, etc. although they may be somewhat limited and/or on a space available basis. For more serious issues you generally have to go off base.
Services off base can be excellent but will obviously vary quite a bit. Many places in Europe and Japan are excellent and English speaking doctors are readily available. With FEHB insurance (and presumably other types) all doctors overseas are considered in network. On base will generally bill your insurance. Off base will vary. A hospital in Europe took it for tests, surgery, hospitalization and billed insurance directly. In Japan you generally have to pay up front and get reimbursed, which is generally pretty timely.
in the southern district (Ft. Benning)? I have been waiting for at least a referral and then I heard chatter about this freeze. Can anyone confirm please? Thank you!!
Math and Science are good areas to have, as is SPED. To be even more competitive you should both try and maximize your certifications for DoDEA and you won't know that for certain until you apply and they examine your transcripts.
Be prepared for the chance that one of you would get an offer first and the other one would have to play a bit of a long game and wait to be picked up as a local hire once you got to your new assignment.
Does anyone know anything about international schools? I found an opportunity about teaching at international schools with a lot of the same benefits as the DODEA. Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I just wait out the dodea or try for this?
1. I realize that people are receiving offers for locations they did not request. If this should happen I would take it, but should I go ahead and add the Pacific area to my application?
2. How much will adding places like Japan & Okinawa really increase my chances of being hired? I have a Masters, and I am qualified for HS & MS English, MS Social Studies, and HS Humanities.
3. My quals don't seem to be in large demand, but do I stand a decent chance for Europe if I leave my app as is?
4. How difficult is it to transfer to Europe from the Pacific (after a tour)?
5. We love to ski--so there is that draw. But I would love to hear what makes Japan appealing to those of you that know what it is like.
I apologize for the overload of info, but I think this chatboard will provide the most valuable insight and advice.
TeachSara, my school had about 8 openings last year, and I was interviewed in late-April and got a tentative offer a few days later. This year, there seems to be fewer openings in some schools, so I think hiring isn't happening as early.
