I am worried that the wording makes it appear as though I scored poorly. I have never taken the Praxis. I took a different assessment ... Why can't they just use "n/a" instead of "no"? Will principals misunderstand this? The only thing I can think to do is take the Praxis ($$$$), but I would rather put money into more college hours. Thoughts?
Does anyone know how many positions for a vision teacher (Visually Impaired or combination with other sped cred) there are overseas? Anyone heard of any openings? I know Japan and that region does but just curious if any more might open up or if they were filled. Thanks!
Seems like few people are getting e-mails and things. I haven't heard a thing from DODEA via e-mail or anything since I applied back in October for secondary math and had preferred destination as Korea. I'm guessing my chances aren't good for next school year?
So I'm feeling pretty confident for my interview and what they may ask me. But tell me some things you wish you had asked at your interviews for overseas posts if you don't mind. Anyone feel free to share. Thanks.
HelpOthersSouthernteach. I think I may have met you. ;) If you need to travel between complexes, you will be able to use a district van. If you live close enough to your main work location, you could potentially walk, take base shuttle, take a train to the closest train stations then walk, etc.
Currently, I am an SLP in Alaska, where contracts are sent out in Feb., with 30 days to sign and return. Given this time frame, it seems that I may have to give up my contract with the district I am currently servicing in hopes of being considered by DoDEA. This is a large gamble considering I am a home owner. Have any of you dealt with similar situations? If so, any thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I think they were calling for references during the 4th of July holiday week for administrators. In my district, they could have revoked my teaching certificate, but I knew that, so I also obtained a certificate in another state where I never planned to work, but where obtaining it was fairly easy and inexpensive. As soon as I knew I would be leaving, I assisted my district in finding my replacement and luckily this person was in place at the beginning of the school-year. :) Recently, others have said with the background check being so backlogged, they have not actually started until Oct-Dec. rather than at the beginning of the year. Had they known, they would have waited to resign. My suggestion is not to resign until you have orders. However, be honest and open and do what you can to find your replacement if at all possible. That is what I would do anyway.
HelpOthersHaving the steering wheel place you in the middle of the road rather than the perimeter helps most rather than hinders. If you are concerned, when you get to Japan, you can purchase an export car that meets the Japanese standards but still has the steering on the left. Your choice.
TeachYou could get away with not having a car in many parts of Japan. I am at Yokosuka and many people opt to not have a car. Cars here are $1000-3000.
HelpOthersIn Japan, cars are very INexpensive as Teach mentioned. Also, depending on how close you live to work, you can ride a bike or walk, take the base shuttle, take a train and walk, etc. Insurance for driving is also cheap in Japan.
I know most teachers gladly accept any DODEA job offered us. But if you had a choice, would you choose to work at Yokosuka or Yokota? I'm curious about the similarities and differences.
When applying as a DODEA internal applicant, can the references be from prior DODEA supervisors, or does it have to be the current one? I have two from prior DODEA principals, (as recent as last SY) and I am not sure I want to let my current principal know that I am looking to leave.
TeachI worked at an amazing school in DDESS last year, but my family and I missed living overseas. I opened up my application, and once I accepted an interview, I spoke with my administrators. They were so understanding, as they knew it was not that I wasn't happy at the school...we just wanted an adventure!
