I have a question regarding benefits. I currently teach at an international school and living overseas. My permanent address is listed as the US. I have been notified that some of my benefits will be different. I am assuming flights will one. Has anyone heard of this before or have any information? Thank you so much!
If however your current school offered you those incentives to relocate, then DoDDS will also offer them. Generally they seem to want a contract or offer letter showing that those benefits are part of your current package.
I have known people who just use their permanent US address and are never asked about proving their current benefits, even though their current employer is clearly OCONUS.
Also, make sure that you are using your US address as your Home of Record if possible. Otherwise your RAT, return travel/move etc will all be based on the current foreign country.
How does paying your rent work? Do you get a lump sum of LQA to pay your rent in one big yearly check? Or do you get it bi-weekly and pay your rent monthly?
TeachI believe it depends on where you are going. If I am not mistaken, Korea has a very different way to renting. I recall a colleague talking about having to pay her year or two years up-front. She had to walk through the streets with the equivalent of like $100,000 USD.
hahaThat is correct. Korea pays in advance for you year (you/the landlord get a lump sum check). Most everywhere else you estimate your rent/utilities and then they break that amount into 26 payments that you get in your paycheck.
How long can dependents stay behind in CONUS before they join and still have the tickets covered? Does anyone know where to find the instructions about that particular issue?
Note 5: Travel in Family Unit Not Required: You may travel alone or be accompanied by family members. Unaccompanied family members will not be allowed delayed use of renewal agreement authority beyond 6 months after the date you begin such travel. (Ref Para C4156, JTR Vol II)
When in doubt, ask HR. Also, the people at TOPS can sometimes have information about the procedures.
SandArtThanks, as always, haha! We are in the same dilemma. We are considering using OpenDoor to sell our home. A neighbor had a good experience with it rather than a realtor and waiting for the house to sell. Not sure yet, but if my husband stays behind the dogs will have less quarantine time in Japan.
I ask because my current school district just asked us to sign a new contract by next week and we have until June 5th to cancel( new policy). After that, there would be a fine and we would not be able to re-apply to the district for two years (yikes!)
Anyway, my background check should be OK accept for my credit. It's taken a hit to about a 650 score due to a charge off from a joint account I thought was closed. Check my credit last week and found it.
happyteacherI really don't think its a huge issue. I think they are more interested in tax liens and major major debt, not that you have a few late payments or have a balance on your credit card.
That being said, very few (I have never heard of any, personally or even 2nd/3rd hand, although I am sure it has happened) people get kicked out once the tentative offer is made. I have even heard of people with bankruptcies etc making it through so I would not be overly worried.
The one thing that might get someone is debt to the gov't with IRS issues and/or defaulted student loans to the gov't but even then it's not necessarily a deal breaker (ironic since a job with DoDDs would make it more likely you could start paying on the debt in most cases).
If you (anyone in this situation) can get student loans and/or IRS debts reinstated and on a payment plan, even it's it only a month or two before they do the check, then you have much less to worry about.
Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with AVID in a DODEA school. I have taugh AVID for 4 years and am trained, etc. Is it something that is hired for or looked at when interviewing other positions? Any insights on AVID would be great.
As for how common/valuable it is a certification I know quite a few people with the cert since it requires only a relatively short training and certification in one other area. Out of the 180+ openings in the last internal transfer round there were around 5 that had AVID as one of the certification requirements.
So, it is helpful as one more thing to be able to offer but not exactly super high needs.
Finally..... I finally got a referral for a MS Social Studies slot at Yokota. Hopefully, an interview is on the horizon. Keeping fingers, toes, and eyes crossed.
hahaThis might be the time to be bold and reach out to the principal with an email detailing your training and experience and enthusiasm for the position. Nothing to lose at this point!
SandArtI am so glad you're a week ahead of me. I haven't heard anything since I accepted the tentative offer on April 12th. I did apply for a passport on my own a couple weeks ago, though.
