Does DoDEA use BCBA's? Are many of the sped people you know qualified as a BCBA? I'm just curious because I'm working toward getting my certification as one. (board certified behavior analyst)
Hubs is seco...See MoreDoes there seem to be as high a demand for math teachers within DoDEA as there is in public schools within the US?
Also, do the overseas schools tend to hire hard to fill positions first before moving on to the more basic regular ed positions? I'm trying to get a feel for where schools might be in the hiring process.
SandArtEuxpat, I believe I will be at one of them. I assume the tentative offer had the old school because the name is not finalized for the new one. I still sent papers back signed because I would have taken any position for any school in Japan. Glad I got math and not 1st or 2nd grade! Those teachers deserve medals. Not sure I could do it.
FrankIf living on base is an option, is there any way to know what size unit you'd be given? I'm a school psych with 7 years experience; I have a wife and three children- Hypothetically, do you think I'd be given a 2 bedroom, a 3 bedroom, or a 4 bedroom unit (if they were available)?
hahaIn general, they are pretty good about giving you what you need, if it is available. Teachers qualify for pretty high quarters rating (like an officer). On base is only available at a handful of locations so the odds are that you won't have to worry about it.
SandArtWe are bringing our two dogs as well. I was looking last night, and some airlines do not take shizu (I spelled it wrong on purpose because it was reported for language) dogs. Some let you bring them with you on the plane, and some have to be in cargo.... so many questions and very little answers.
A good car can generally be had for much less then $5K. They may also be including temporary housing. That is reimbursable but usually you pay for the first 10 days and then start getting reimbursed.
The good news is that as soon as you arrive at your new post you can apply for a 3 month interest free pay advance which is very helpful. Also, credit unions on base are generally very helpful since you will have a contract and can sign up for direct deposit etc.
Try not to stress about this. As I said, there is help available for you and this is a temporary hardship that will set you up in a very good future situation.
Chances of a special ed hire? HQT all core content areas, 7 years experience and will have masters completed in Admin in less than a year. Also, confused on what boxes I should checked to be qualified in. I'm in Ohio and our license is just mild to moderate intervention specialist k-12.
SandArtThanks, SpedTeacher74. I was wondering about that. In AZ I have consistently had sped students in my general ed classes. I was beginning to think there are very little sped kids in DoDEA. Best of luck to you. It sounds like you have to be certified for MANY things if you're sped.
CandoJapan is the only referrals I received (3) . I had an interview two weeks ago and a request for another school this week. I received an email notification today that my account is inactive. Maybe good news regarding the first interview.
Hey All, I got a late start on this year's hiring scramble, but the application is finally finished, and I have already landed my first referral list. I am curious though — I have I missed the window for hiring in Europe (especially England), or is there still hope? I was offered a position last year in Seoul (for family reasons), but had to turn it down, so I learned this year, not to accept any interview that comes my way. For all of you veterans to DoDEA, is that sound thinking, or am I missing something? Thanks…it's good to be back!!!
I remember that they didn't permit us to bring a car and there is no reason to do that anyway. You are going to the Camry homeland and the price and quality of Japanese used cars is wonderful. You will not want to be fighting issues of spec differences at repair shops, registration and licensing red tape with no Japanese skills, ALWAYS driving with your steering on the wrong side, unable to reach parking garage tickets or quickly pay toll road booths. What a headache.
SandArtThank you for responding. All good info. That 25% sounds amazing! We have some money saved, but I am also concerned about costs for settling in a new location. Thanks again.
