...See MoreOk. So let me get this straight. I turned in my fingerprint card last week (it will come back clean) and they will give me a firm contract based on that?
And then continue an in "depth check" that could take months...weird. What if something doesn't check out in July and I have already quit my current teaching job! That's no good!
Shouldn't they do a through check first and then start paper work on my orders...
hahaYes, it's not perfect but the logistics of a full background check make it difficult to come up with better solutions. It all requires a leap of faith in the end.
Keep in mind that with DoDDS, even with a firm offer, orders, contract etc they can still release you without cause until you have passed your two years of provisional service.
SandArtFeeling the same about wanting to get it official. Like TeacherMama, I am no criminal and have excellent credit. I can't see an issue, but I wish I had a firm offer for peace of mind. I guess it's better than waiting till June to get a job, though! Knowing now makes me thankful, even if I am not feeling patient.
SandArtAnyone have experience flying from Japan? Which airlines do you use? Do you think business class is worth it? I saw some flights where you can lie down, but I am sure the cost is insane.
TeacherMama K in DaeguFirst they do the fingerprint check. Mine took about a week, but I am local to headquarters so I did my fingerprints in person. If that comes back clean they give you your firm offer and start paperwork to get orders. Meanwhile they do the more in depth check, which can take quite a while.
How hard is it for a non-educator to get subbing jobs? My husband is an engineer and plans to go to grad school while we are overseas but we thought he could sub high school Math and science as needed.
HSSpedTeacherSubs are in short supply at most overseas locations. He should be able to work everyday if he subs in more than just a couple of subjects.
dantelI'm the husband of a DODEA teacher in Korea. Once you arrive to your location, your husband can fill out a sub packet. There are two background checks conducted, the federal check takes a while so its typically 2 to 4 months before we start getting calls to sub. Once you are approved, there is no shortage of work.
angelYes!!!!! Keywords would be awesome. I was searching for something a few days ago and it was a long process of finding it. Also the ability to private message a person, with the option to block people of course.
TeachI know that in Okinawa some of the technicians were local nationals, but we did have some who were Americans, so if he is unable to transfer he could look into those companies.
TeachThere are often contract positions available at many bases. Also, each branch has their morale and welfare divison that hires for everything from working at the restaurants to Human Resources to IT, etc. Some of my colleagues in Okinawa had spouses who worked as AVID tutors and subs within the schools.
