I feel like with hs, ms, and elementary along with gifted for ms and elementary, my chances have improved. One step at a time. And thanks - I really appreciate your help, haha.
hahaNo problem. Generally, the best idea is to apply and get your EAS processed as soon as possible. You can always go back and add a target date and/or ask for your EAS to be reevaluated.
I had my interview in April, job offer two weeks later, passports in July (worst part) and arrived here August 10. It was so complicated and parts of it were truly anxiety producing (background check, how much it costs, moving our dogs). COVID made everything harder so I have no idea what it would have been like minus the global pandemic. I almost backed out twice, but now that I am here am so glad I didn't. The quality of the school, coworkers, and this once in a lifetime experience totally make up for all of last years heartburn. Kinda like a pregnancy.
Does anyone have recent (2020-21) experience with having their application unfrozen? I have a friend who sent a request to CHRA and was told that they will only unfreeze it if she applies for CONUS positions. This doesn't sound right. I had mine unfrozen last year just fine. We are in OCONUS and permanent CONUS hires.
Does this message, "The DoDEA staff is currently processing your application. You will be unable to make changes at this time." on my EAS application mean that I the tentative offer is mine?
But no, do not make any major financial commitment. Don't sign any contract, make any deposit, or do anything else that has serious consequences for your financial health should the firm offer not materialize. I think this was explained in your tentative offer.
Wait for the orders.
In the meantime, clean out the basement, and the garage, renew all driver's licenses, and tourist passports, check that you have a couple of good credit cards (no foreign purchase fees), and let yourself begin to dream.
haha - fake degrees? The Phoenix University degrees are not fake degrees. This AZ-based institution may have a unique way of awarding degrees that heavily favors any person willing to hand over $30,000 (sometimes $40,000...cash preferred), but they are not fake, I think.
WanderlustThank you both for your responses. Just so you know, no skeletons or shady spy/underworld activity to found in my background check. Lol I just want to be prepared once I get my firm offer, fingers crossed. I have passport paperwork already turned into HR person and pet vet appointment with the military vet nearest to me. Thank you again!
I have several questions regarding leave without pay. Is there anyone here who has experience/ information regarding this? Or an official point of contavct who is knowledgeable about it and can possibly help us getting the process started. Thank you!
emma20Thank you! Actually thinking about lwop as a way of getting out of our current location. In that case I can't be in pay status, not even a day, I assume. Do I have to fully resign? If I resign I have no rights to return to my current position if nothing else pans out, correct? Is there any poc for these rather specific questions? Thanks again!
IcanreadA union rep in my area said LWOP hasn't be granted for a CONUS teacher in well over a year- not sure if it's true or not. Also if you take LWOP, you are supposed to be placed back in a position in your current location, unless you are following your spouse who is PCSing to a new location.
But as...See MoreThanks. Looks pretty similar to previous policies (based only on a casual look at the previous policy a while back). Basically boils down to, you can ask and they might say yes. I did notice that there are extra hoops to jump through/conditions that must be met by "educators only" (e.g. local hire back fill must be available, etc.).
But as you say, may as well give it a shot, especially if the only other alternative is to resign and go back to the states.
This policy is a legal requirement, that exists only to cover HR butts. In the event of a lawsuit, HR can honestly go into court, show the policy to the judge, and explain that they have fulfilled all the requirements of both the law, and federal regulations.
This policy is pre-emptive evidence, to be used in court, to show that DoDEA is a caring employer, who did everything in their power to assist the unappreciative plaintive (that's you).
HR, and all of it's policies exist to serve the employer, not the employee.
Like I said previously, good luck, and I hope you get it.
And people do occasionally get it. That's one of the requirements for HR, so they have a stronger case should they need to go to court. In other words, they don't want to tell the judge that they have a policy, but that they deny everyone. But this means that the policy is simply a lotter, with an occasional winner.
I started off looking here and reading up almost daily. I even received my practice interview questions from here (thanks @haha). Good Luck to everyone currently applying. Hang in there!!
Hello everyone! I am looking to get AVID certified. Can anyone please help me? I am struggling to know exactly where to go online to get this. I want to make sure I get the certificate that DODEA approves of. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I value this group very much.
I was in shock. I submitted my app over 7 years ago. Nothing except a few interviews Oki and S. Korea. Out of the blue. I am 59 years old. Do people still do this?????
Are you wondering if people accept offers at age 59? The simple answer is yes.
There are many old (really old) teachers in DoDEA.
HQ seems quite content with that, although Admin can often be seen scurrying through the building, quietly trying to encourage the 75+ teachers to move on. (Metaphorically, that is. I haven't seen them push anyone down a staircase, yet. But some of them do have a habit of assigning 70+ year old teachers with a bad hip to the top floor, in a building with no elevator. Yes, it happens.)
Being 59 doesn't automatically make you an ideal candidate, but in many ways DoDEA is simply looking for someone competent, who can shut up and follow orders. And many 59 year olds already have a good career behind them, and a nice pension (nicer than the DoDEA pension), and are just looking for one last hurrah, without the kids in tow.
Take the job if it fits with your end-of-career plans. But temper your expectations. You have 30 years of teaching experience, which DoDEA is not in the least interested. Remember, it's their way, or the highway.
Can you really shut up and follow orders? Or would it be better to work another three years where you are, and push your pension another 7%?
If you are a competent person, with 30 years in decent district, financially you'll do better turning down the offer. Just go to Germany on vacation.
But if you're a hippie who never stayed more than two years at any one school, then this could be your last chance to bank a few bucks, before applying for Medicaid.
IcanreadI know a handful of teachers who didn't start working for Dodea until close to retirement age. I agree with the above post regarding making the best decision based on your end of career plans. Good luck! There is also a Facebook page with tons of helpful info - Dodea teachers interested.
hahaMore likely for 1st, last AND security. You should qualify for a salary advance if you need it which would more than cover it. New employees can't apply until they get to the new post but you may be able to apply before you leave.
